Rick and Morty was once again the star of Adult Swim’s April 1st shenanigans, but this time, fans were rewarded quite handsomely for humoring the company, as the annual joke reveal masked a legitimate piece of good news.

Rick and Morty has been a hit with fans for years now, consistently earning its renewals and even making in-universe fourth wall-breaking jokes about its own planned longevity. While things seemed to finally hit a rocky patch when the show’s co-creator and major voice talent had to resign following some very serious allegations being leveled, the show was able to persevere and release another season with new voice talent and a noticeably dialed-down tone. Since then, fans have been eager for another update, with series creator Dan Harmon promising a lot more Rick and Morty following the show’s season seven ‘reset’.

Mike Judge’s ride is a drug-fueled, spy-driven frolic through moral hangups and philosophical dives, just like Rick and Morty.

While it was recently revealed that Solar Opposites’ sixth season will also be its last, and a faux Rick and Morty cancellation would have made for low-hanging fruit for Adult Swim’s April Fool’s antics, the company chose to go in a different direction. Instead, fans were treated to a pretty unique project on the Adult Swim YouTube channel, which uploaded a video titled April Fools 2025: Portal People | Rick and Morty that shows a cast of real people don stage makeup, props, and a few neat costumes to reenact some fan-favorite scenes from the show. While it’s an absolutely awful ‘prank’, it was a pretty fun way to kill a half hour, and it came with a surprise that fans didn’t expect on the patently infuriating holiday: a preview of the show’s actual upcoming eighth season and the premiere date for the installment. Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen also released an official statement to accompany the joke video and premiere news.

We hope you enjoyed our theater interpretations of ‘Rick and Morty,’ especially if you are well-off/impulsive and now want to back a Broadway version of the show. For the rest of you, we’re glad you now know when Season 8 is starting so you have time to stretch and get loose because the team has yet again made a totally great season of television.

There won’t be too much time to stretch, as Rick and Morty season 8 will premiere on May 25 this year before hitting streaming in September. Rick and Morty is easily one of the best comedy series with the most rewatchability, managing to stay in step with some of the most well-loved live-action shows in that regard as well. It was pretty much a foregone conclusion that the show would come back for at least one more installment, and fans now know exactly when to expect it. The focus on the series by Adult Swim for this April Fools promo project also shows some real confidence in the future of the show, which should serve as a bonus gift for fans worried that it’ll go the way of Solar Opposites soon.

While Rick and Morty’s earlier seasons still rank higher for most fans, the idea of a fresh start following the controversy that dogged the project following the Justin Roiland incident is certainly something that could give the show new life. Season seven was a step forward from its predecessors that managed to pick up close to the tail end, so fans can expect an eighth season that improves on that even further. With any luck, the show might just knock this next season out of the part and earn itself a real Broadway adaptation. After all, it worked for the anime-style project.

Rick and Morty is available to stream on Max in the US, with season 8 set to premiere on May 25, 2025 on Adult Swim.
