John Wick is one of Keanu Reeves’s most memorable and beloved characters, and fans will be thrilled to hear that John Wick 5 is in the works.
According to Variety, Lionsgate shared at CinemaCon on Tuesday April 1st, 2025 that Reeves will star in another John Wick film. There will also be two more John Wick projects: a spinoff movie about Caine, which will be directed by Donnie Yen (who will also play the assassin character), and a prequel series that will be animated.

Fans are definitely happy to see the character back in action. Hopefully he will say more unforgettable lines like one of his best quotes from the first John Wick movie released in 2014. John talks to the terrifying villain Viggo Tarasov (Michael Nyqvist) and explains how much he cares about the dog that his late wife Helen gave him. He says:
“People keep asking if I’m back and I haven’t really had an answer. But now, yeah, I’m thinkin’ I’m back. So you can either hand over your son or you can die screaming alongside him.”
While John Wick fans are definitely happy to see the character back in action, there is one question: how can John Wick come back when he dies at the end of John Wick: Chapter 4? Even Reeves said “the character’s dead” in an interview. Although no story details have been shared, it’s possible to come up with a few guesses. Perhaps John Wick 5 will take place in the past, which could explain why Reeves’s character is still alive. The upcoming film could also explain that he didn’t die after all. Since he’s such a strong and powerful character, it would make sense if John Wick had survived. As many have pointed out, audiences don’t see Wick being buried, and although other characters like Bowery King (Laurence Fishburne) mourn Wick, that doesn’t mean that he really died.
No matter how the franchise explains how Wick is still alive, one thing is certain: John Wick 5 will likely be as clever, thrilling, and surprising as the previous entries in the franchise. Every time Reeves plays his iconic character, he shows his talent for adding several layers to whoever he is playing. After being orphaned when he was a child and then losing his wife, John Wick understands pain and hardship, and he doesn’t suffer fools. With the success of the franchise, a fifth movie was inevitable. As reported by Variety, the first four movies earned $1.011 billion at the global box office as of May 2023.
John Wick 5 will be directed by Chad Stahelski, who directed every previous movie in the franchise and also serves as a producer. As Variety reported, fans will also get the chance to see Reeves again in the upcoming movie Ballerina, which is part of the same world as the franchise and stars Ana de Armas.
In many interviews, Reeves has shared positive thoughts about appearing in the action franchise. In 2023, he said on Good Morning America:
“I mean, I think the film is really epic, and I love playing the role. I love the ‘John Wick’ world.”
There is no John Wick 5 release date just yet, and while the franchise is no longer streaming on Netflix, fans can stream the movies on AMC+. Fans can also watch Reeves in the comedy movies Outcome, which Jonah Hill directed, and also Good Fortune, which will be released on October 17th, 2025.
