From the offset, Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition wants you to explore. It wants you to know that you have an unprecedented level of freedom from the second you step foot on Mira. That said, you can’t explore the whole planet immediately, with the game introducing many of its core mechanics before it takes the training wheels off.

These are some things you really, really, really, ought to bear in mind before diving too far into Xenoblade Chronicles X.
Of course, it’s not linear during these opening hours, either. You can freely take off across Primordia and find a handful of missions you can complete, such as Welcome Back, Conner. Yet despite being such an early game quest, it isn’t afraid to throw powerful enemies in your path. Here’s how to surpass them without a fight.
How To Start Welcome Back, Conner
Being such an early game quest, there are very few restrictions before you can take on this quest. All you need to have done is finished Chapter Two and you’re free to find it. It is situated just outside the walls of NLA, on the east side. You will find Nathan and Monica arguing over what they should do in regards to their missing comrade.
Conner went missing in the middle of their assignment. Monica says they should go back and refuses to abandon him. Nathan argues that all of them going back risks losing all three of them. Ultimately though, they defer to your expertise, which of course has you offering to save Conner.
How To Reach Conner’s Comm Device
Conner was last seen by Sickle Rock Rise, to the northwest of here, and is marked on your map. Head over there to find Conner, safe and sound. Chat with him to accept his thanks, at which point he explains that he couldn’t get in contact because he lost his comm device, which is now all the way over on the Sayram Northeast Plain, which is even further to the northwest. Good Blade that you are, you offer to find it for him.
Once you reach the Sayram Northeast Plain, you will see the Comm Device resting atop a hill, guarded by a set of rather large Grexes that likely to be a significant level above you. You come anywhere near them, and they are liable to defeat you in just a hit or two, with very few chances for you to succeed against even one of them, let alone the whole pack.
Unlike regular blue collectibles, red quest items cannot be picked up in combat. You have to defeat or avoid the Grexes entirely.
There are two ways of making it past the Grexes this early in the same. The first involves playing as Elma and using Shadowrunner, which makes you invisible to enemies outside of combat for a few seconds. This will let you run right past the Grexes to pick up Conner’s comm device. However, Shadowrunner uses 1,000 TP to activate, so try to build this up in battles beforehand so you’re prepared.
The second option is to climb the hill from behind, jumping on the thin outcropping as you weave your way up. The Grexes tend to remain stationary, only looking ahead of them if you approach from the front. Ascending from behind will put your at their backs, letting you grab the comm device without being seen. Do this at night for a little more safety as the Grexes go to sleep. They can still see you, but their cone of vision is slightly reduced.
Once you’ve picked up the Comm Device, head on back to return it to him. He thanks you profusely once again, and heads on back to his team by himself, offering you the reward in their stead. You are given 5,000 Credits, 110 EXP, and the Bargain Tank Top (Blue Camo).
