Summary

  • Atomfall’s hidden details focus on pre-2000 British media references, like Wyndham’s homage to author John Wyndham.
  • Easter eggs also nod to video game culture, with a Broken Sword gravestone and a Dead Parrot sketch nod in a shop.
  • References span from Last of the Summer Wine to Mr. Bean, Fawlty Towers, The Wicker Man, and even a surprise appearance of the TARDIS from Doctor Who.

It’s an expectation most games come with their fair share of Easter eggs and hidden references. These usually come in the form of references to previous titles the developers have worked on, or allusions to other more popular series, but Atomfall takes a different approach.

8 Games To Play If You Like Atomfall

If you liked Atomfall’s alternate history and post-apocalyptic setting, you’ll love these games.

While there are a couple of references to video games, Atomfall takes its 20th Century English setting seriously, with most of its references being from pre-2000 popular British media. Some of these are pretty well hidden, and if you’re not familiar with the source material you can miss them completely. Here are the best hidden details in Atomfall and where you can find them.

Wyndham’s Namesake

Wyndham Village

Wyndham Village entrance from Atomfall.

The map of Atomfall is broken up into seperate regions making navigation a more streamlined, but still engaging task. The central location you’ll likely return to the most often (aside from the Interchange), is Wyndham Village.

At first glance, you might think that this is a typically quaint name for a Northern English village, but it’s actually a reference to popular sci-fi author John Wyndham. It goes deeper than just the author’s name, with the titular Triffids from his most popular title, The Day of the Triffids, strongly resembling the poisonous plant creatures that you’ll find Casterfell Woods.

Broken Sword

Wyndham Village Church

Broken Sword gravestone easter egg in Atomfall.

While most of the Easter eggs and hidden details you’ll find in Atomfall are references to British TV history, there are still a couple of nods to video game culture as well. One of the most well-hidden of these is a gravestone you’ll find under the church in Wyndham village that names George Stobbart.

This is the name of the protagonist of the long-running series of adventure games, Broken Sword. Even though the Broken Sword games will see you traveling all around the world, the game series is developed by Revolution Studios, based in York, a location close to where Atomfall is based.

Last Of The Summer Wine

Skethermoor

The Last Of Summer Wine bathtub easter egg from Atomfall.

Last of the Summer Wine isn’t a series you’ll often see popping up in video games, but as has been established, Atomfall doesn’t tend to make the most typical references you’d expect from the medium.

The long-running Yorkshire-based sitcom followed a trio of older gentlemen and their various mischievous antics, and this premise managed to stretch over 31 seasons between 1973 and 2010. One of its many iconic moments is a scene where the protagonists ride down a hill in a bathtub, and this is recreated in Skethermoor, only this time with flat-cap donned skeletons.

5

Monty Python

Wyndham Village Shop

Dead parrot in cage easter egg in Atomfall.

When asked to name an iconic British comedy act, Generation X and their seniors will jump to mention Monty Python, and it’s no surprise, given the magnitude of sketches, live shows, and movies that the troupe contributed to pop culture throughout the latter half of the 20th Century.

Atomfall left us with more questions than answers.

While there are plenty of options when it comes to sketches from the act that can be referenced, the dead parrot sketch is perhaps one of the most iconic. In Wyndham Village Shop, on the counter you’ll find a Norweigan Blue Parrot lying in its cage, and don’t let the shopkeeper fool you, it’s definitely dead.

4

Fawlty Towers

Wyndham Village Mereview Hotel

Fawlty Towers sign easter egg in Atomfall.

It’s a common stereotype that British TV shows manage to make a massive cultural impact in spite of a limited run of episodes, and nothing exemplifies that more than Fawlty Towers, running for four years but only managing to squeeze out 12 episodes over two series.

The wacky ongoings of the eponymous hotel have entertained generations, and one of the series’ most recognizable pieces of iconography is the oft-broken sign for the hotel. It’s no wonder, then, that the sign’s shape and forlorn typography are recreated almost to the letter at the Mereview Hotel in Wyndham Village.

3

Mr Bean

Slatten Dale

Mr Bean car easter egg in Atomfall.

A British comedy icon that has transcended generations and international borders (likely due to his limited vocabulary) is Mr Bean. Whether it’s Rowan Atkinson’s original live-action series from the ’90s, the animated show from the 2000s, or the multiple movies, Mr Bean has been hard to miss over the years.

Being such a well-recognized part of British pop culture, it’s no wonder that Mr Bean is referenced in Atomfall, but it’s one of the tougher details to spot. Up on a hillside, out of reach in Slatten Dale, you’ll find a skeletal recreation of Mr Bean’s armchair-car contraption, paused in time riding down the hill.

2

The Wicker Man

Casterfell Woods

Wickerman in the background of a landscape in Atomfall.

Even though the developers of Atomfall clearly had a taste for comedy, they also weren’t shy in their appreciation of classic British horror either. One of the best horror movies to come from the last century is the 1973 folk horror masterpiece The Wicker Man.

The pagan antagonists of the film can be easily compared to the mysterious druids of Atomfall, and one of the clearest signs of this are the giant Wicker Men you’ll find scattered around Casterfell Woods. While unfortunately, you can’t set them on fire, you can climb inside and find some hidden loot instead.

1

Doctor Who

Skethermoor

Doctor Who hat easter egg in Atomfall.

One of the most detailed and easy-to-miss (even if it is hiding in plain sight) Easter eggs in Atomfall is for the classic sci-fi series Doctor Who. Skethermoor is one of the more tense regions in Atomfall, and the many stationed Protocol Soldiers won’t hesitate to attack if you’re found on their territory.

So, it’s pretty easy to be distracted from spotting the dot of navy in the distance when you enter through Wyndham Village. If you get a closer look, you’ll realize that it’s the TARDIS from Doctor Who, and if you manage to survive the enemy gunshots and multiple mines surrounding the building it’s parked beside, you’ll hear it teleport away as you climb up to it. But no need to worry, as you’ll find the Fourth Doctor’s hat placed right where the TARDIS was just sitting.
