Assassin’s Creed Shadows is not only a big success, but recent figures indicate that it is one of the best-selling video games of 2025 so far. The latest Assassin’s Creed game finally takes the historical action franchise to feudal Japan, where a young shinobi named Naoe and foreign-born samurai Yasuke band together to hunt down the people responsible for the death of Naoe’s father. Assassin’s Creed Shadows would be faced with numerous delays and controversies leading up to its March 2025 launch, but the finished product has been getting good reviews so far.

While Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ review scores aren’t quite as high as some of the franchise’s most beloved entries, many players still see it as another solid installment with impressive graphics and differing playstyles between its two main protagonists. In the US, Assassin’s Creed Shadows was the best-selling game of this past week according to the Circana Retail Tracking Service, as reported by gaming industry analyst Mat Piscatella on Bluesky. Additionally, Assassin’s Creed Shadows is on track to be one of the highest-selling games of 2025 so far, with only Monster Hunter Wilds selling higher during its own launch week back in February.

Okami and Bayonetta creator Hideki Kamiya also complimented Assassin’s Creed Shadows while chiding the initial backlash as “overblown.”

Shortly after Assassin’s Creed Shadows launched, the development team at Ubisoft Quebec thanked fans for their continuing support following its successful release and hinted at new content for the game. So far, one DLC expansion is planned, with Claws of Awaji set to take Naoke and Yasuke to a new region for a “spookier” experience that spans 10 hours of additional content later this year. In the meantime, the base Assassin’s Creed Shadows continues to be a critical and commercial success, and is already shaping up to be one of the biggest-selling games of the year not too long after its initial launch.
