Summary

  • While Shadows has only just come out, Ubisoft might have another two Assassin’s Creed games ready to go.
  • Reportedly, Codename Invictus, the multiplayer spin-off, “should” launch later this year.
  • Ubisoft also allegedly planned for the Black Flag remake to release in 2025, although with Shadows’ delay, it might get pushed back.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows only just came out, but Ubisoft might already have another game up its sleeve.

According to Insider Gaming editor-in-chief Tom Henderson, Codename Invictus “should” launch later this year. It isn’t a new mainline entry, but a multiplayer spin-off developed alongside specialist talent from the For Honor and Rainbow Six Siege teams. It was first reported by VGC in an interview with series boss Marc-Alexis Cote, and while he didn’t shed any details on what we can expect, he did explain why Ubisoft is experimenting with a standalone multiplayer game.

Invictus will be part of the Animus Hub, the new Call of Duty-style launcher.

“The reasoning behind having a multiplayer initiative as well is I feel Assassin’s Creed can branch into different channels,” Cote said. “We’ve only scratched the surface of what we can do with the Animus [in] Assassin’s Creed. We’ve had multiplayer in the past that was not super accessible.”

The Black Flag Remake Might Also Launch This Year

Two Assassin’s Creed games in one year might sound like a lot, but there are a few things to consider: Shadows was originally slated to launch in September 2024, but it was delayed due to the critical reception of Star Wars Outlaws; two Chronicles spin-offs were released in 2016, mere months apart; while Rogue and Unity launched on the same day, each for a different console generation.

Ubisoft clearly didn’t plan to launch Shadows and Invictus in the same year. Regardless, it wouldn’t be the first time that two games in the series have launched within such a narrow window, and it almost certainly won’t be the last, given that Ubisoft plans to release ten Assassin’s Creed games in the next five years alone. In fact, we might even see three Assassin’s Creed games launch this year.

Over the weekend, the unannounced Black Flag remake bizarrely showed up as “Announced” on the PlayStation Store, pointing to an imminent reveal. Backing that up, Henderson claimed that both the remake (Codename Obsidian) and Invictus are due to launch before Hexe (the next mainline entry, reportedly set in 16th-century Germany). But Henderson said that “Everything has been pushed back because of the Shadows delay” and speculated that Hexe may instead launch in 2027, with the Black Flag remake being pushed back “to release later”, likely next year.

We’ll just have to wait and see, but it’s entirely possible that three different Assassin’s Creed games will launch this year alone.
