Danny Boyle and Alex Garland’s highly anticipated post-apocalyptic horror, 28 Years Later, has had its second trailer teaser shown off at CinemaCon, highlighting some exciting footage before its summer release date. The highly-anticipated sequel to 28 Days Later will be the start of a trilogy in the franchise, which will continue with new characters. The 2002 movie saw Cillian Murphy take on the role of Jim, a bicycle courier, who suddenly wakes up from a coma in the hospital to find out that the world he once knew had been overtaken by a highly contagious, and very aggressive, virus that has caused chaos within society.

The zombie-infested first trailer of 28 Years Later debuted in December last year and featured Taylor-Johnson roaming the lush green fields of England with a bow and arrow. Packed with eerie vibes, running zombies, and military people getting attacked by a bearded infected person, the icing on the cake for the trailer was the unsettling sound of a Taylor Holmes recording of Rudyard Kipling’s war poem “Boots.” The trailer quickly became a hit with zombie lovers, which saw it reach 60.2 million views in its first 24 hours, making it the third most-watched horror trailer ever. Now, in a bid to ramp up the hype, Sony Pictures unleashed a new look at 28 Years Later for a select few at CinemaCon, which also revealed that Sony has only financed the first two sequels, with the fate of the third yet to be decided.

During Sony’s CinemaCon presentation, which ScreenRant attended, 28 Years Later director, Danny Boyle, and Sony shared a teaser trailer for the upcoming zombie movie. Boyle, who has previously directed movies that include Shallow Grave, Trainspotting, and Slumdog Millionaire, revealed that the second movie in the trilogy, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, has been made but that funding is still needed to complete it. According to ScreenRant, the trailer opened in a dark room which saw three military people and a zombie jumping out at them. The scene then cuts to another part of the movie which features an island and a voiceover who says, “Many people dead… infected and non-infected alike. Once you walk onto that mainland, there’s no rescue.”

“We see Aaron Taylor-Johnson and a boy running away from about a dozen infected. Then the military guys again, but this time during the day, also running away from the infected. We see several dozen scenes of people fighting and running from infected. Lots of it seems to take place around the island and near water. Throughout the trailer, splash pages read: “How Much Time…Do We…Have Left?”

Although the latest trailer hasn’t been made available to the public just yet, some new images from the teaser have been released, showing some stills of what fans can expect from 28 Years Later. Actors Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Alfie Williams can be seen standing around in a room while an infected person has been strung up by their feet, a closer look at that zombie in a field that everyone thought was Cillian Murphy, Taylor-Johnson and Williams looking through a gap in a door and, finally, an image of the pair out patrolling the outskirts of their island base.

As highlighted in The Hollywood Reporter, Boyle stated at the event that he “still loves an apocalypse.” “I still love the infected. And I still love blowing s**t up.” Boyle also sent a message to fans who are eager to set their eyes on Cillian Murphy in the movie. “Like all good things in life, you may have to wait a little while for him to make his appearance.”

28 Years Later will be released in theaters on June 20, 2025.
