The First Berserker: Khazan – 7 Combat Tips

Here’s how to take full advantage of the many systems and mechanics at play in The First Berserker: Khazan!

Along the way, you’ll encounter all manner of fearsome foes and formidable bosses that’ll tear you up if your guard’s down. As a part of the Souls-like tradition, the boss fights are the big highlight of the game’s experience. They are also incredibly difficult thresholds where you’ll face challenge after challenge, with each foe bringing something new.

10

Phantom Blade

Phantom Blade is the second boss you fight and is a part of completing Trials of the Frozen Mountain. They are faced after you’ve gone through Khazan’s trials and unlocked all the weapons you can wield. After trying to take control of Khazan’s body, the battle over his spirit commences. Phantom Blade has an array of moves and weapons that he pulls from, from great swords to spears and clawed gauntlets, and they all require a different approach.

Phantom Blade is essentially the base form of all the other phantoms you’ll face throughout the game and is a good place to get used to their movesets. Starting with this fight, you’re going to be tested on the skill of your perfect guard and commit both health damage and stamina damage to future enemies. This is where that aspect of combat is going to be very important.

9

Viper

Viper is the formidable general of the Dragonkin remnants fighting to avenge Hismar’s defeat. Faced at the end of the Forgotten Temple, he is the third main boss you fight, and is the one that definitely sets the tone for the rest of the game with the difficulty. He’s already a pretty tough adversary with his long-range glaive combos that could alternate from jumps, to throwing attacks, and hitting you with a grab. Several of his combos can be guarded for decent openings that can help sap stamina.

But the fight’s not over. Deplete his health through the glaive battle, and the second phase of the fight will begin. After his weapon shatters, Viper takes one of Hismar’s scales and lodges it into his wounded arm. The resulting transformation kicks off the next fight with the transformed monster. He has a new set of vicious attacks and a special move that turns him into a jump scare horror monster. Keep an eye out for openings and beware of his new arm.

8

Rangkus

Rangkus is the second-in-command of the Knivesveil, led by Maluca. He is a rowdy boss to take on and has most of the range in the fight covered. His weapon is a massive mace that can double as a bow/flamethrower, which can mix up your ability to block or dodge by the time he’s a third of the way down health-wise.

Here’s everything you should know before diving into the formidable world of The First Berserker: Khazan!

Most of Rangkus’s stronger attacks have long wind-ups and can track you as you move around to evade him, so a bit of trial and error is a part of the game. Thankfully, when he fires arrows from his mace weapon, they’re easy to track for guarding and dodging. As a human boss, his stamina is always going to steadily recover, so you need to maintain pressure to stagger him for a brutal attack.

7

Trokka

Trokka is an apprentice of Ozma who uses water magic and is fond of jellyfish in her attacks. She uses a mix of close-range attacks with her umbrella staff weapon and pelting you with frost spells from a distance. The jellyfish tend to be utilized defensively, with her making them explode for considerable damage if you’re in the splash zone.

One of her more lethal attacks is when she summons jellyfish all around the perimeter while she rapidly bombards you with frost spells. As a witch, she would tend to utilize these long-ranged attacks that are easy to predict due to their trajectory. She’s quite vulnerable and flinches frequently when you engage in perfect blocks and attacks at close range, so those are the moments you can take a hold of the fight’s momentum.

6

Aratra

Aratra is a large, monstrous spider that dwells in the dark caves within Skoffa Cave. After making the cave its home, the monster spider utilizes its webs to keep you still so that its massive limbs can make short work of you. Aratra could also lace its large limbs with venom to hit you with the buildup of poison that can sap your health if you’re not careful.

Your best chance in the fight is to keep the flow of battle through perfectly guarding the attack combos and flanking the monster to attack the limbs. You’ll also want to chop at the larger clawed limbs. Getting rid of them helps remove Aratra’s deadly poison and diminishes its attack range. By the time both large limbs are gone, the monster is close to death. All you need to do is be careful because it could still bite, trap you in webs, and poison you with its jaws.

5

Shacktuka

Shactuka is the most savage beast within the empire. After capturing it alive, the imperial army tried to tame it for the war effort. Now it’s just a form of brutal execution for the imperial guards of Lionel Mines. He is the primary boss you’ll need to deal with in the Inconceivable Truth mission. This monster is a manifested rampage. His attacks are brutal, the combos are ruthless, and good luck with the timing for his attacks.

The First Berserker: Khazan Vs. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice – Which Game Is Better?

The First Berserker: Khazan has been compared to one of FromSoftware’s biggest titles, Sekiro. So, which one is the best?

One of the few saving graces to his onslaught is that, every so often, the monster hits the wall or takes a pause after a particularly viscous attack. These openings last long enough for you to unload a stream of impactful hits to drain its health and stamina.

4

Volbaino

Volbaino was formerly the guardian beast of Phraugh village. After the Dragonkin drove it to violence, it became a ferocious monster in the end of the First Act of Revenge mission. This boss is a hulking-antlered beast armed with a massive hammer and chisel that he can apply fire damage to. Volbaino is a genuine headache for a boss to manage, with wild combos and ferocious stamina-sapping hammer attacks. And it only gets worse once it’s at half health.

At half health, the large chisel becomes imbued with fire and can even be enhanced with a stronger form of it. When it gets like this, the arena that you initially start the fight in becomes a literal lava floor. As this permanent AOE attack takes place, you’ll want to take the ladder in the back and move to a different level to resume the fight. After this, he’ll execute a smaller-scaled version of the same attack, so now you have to watch the floor along with its relentless combos.

3

Maluca

Leader of the Knivesveil, and one of the emperor’s loyal vassals, Maluca is an enemy of renown and skill. Wielding dual swords for the boss fight, Maluca starts with some viscous combos that have slow wind-up and can make short work of your health. All the skills you’ve developed up to this point would be challenged during this fight. The first phase is a good exercise in dodges and blocks, which is fine for easing into the fray.

Then the second phase happens at half health. Consumed by the power of Chaos, Maluca becomes a half-dragon with several new devastating attacks to match up with his previous phase combos. He’ll also switch from his heavier dual swords to the faster and sleeker blades that’ll slice through you and afflict the chaos ailment. Despite this transformation, his stamina still functions like that of human enemies, so take advantage of any opening you can make, or else he’ll set up more savage attacks.

2

Hismar The Berserk Dragon

Hismar is the largest of the big monster bosses, very similar to the many large dragon bosses known in FromSoftware’s Souls series. As such, the challenge is just getting to his only weakness, the head, and avoiding different cycles of combo attacks that he’ll execute you with. There’s also the flying attacks and the lightning breath he’d blast you with. The best weapon for reaching Hismar’s head is the spear, thanks to the range and different moves you can have with the weapon.

After you beat Hismar’s health down to half, he’ll take things up a notch with phase two of the fight. This starts with a lightning storm followed by Hismar flying around the arena, breathing fire imbued with chaos. The damaging effects of its chaos-imbued attacks add to the already ferocious moveset. Just keep your head up, dodge and guard what you can, and combo as much as you can.

1

Ozma

Ozma is the final boss of the First Berserker: Khazan, having mastered the dark magic of Chaos, and is the driving force behind the destruction of the Empire and the disruption of the Netherworld. He is empowered by a tremendous amount of Chaos and elemental attacks that can strike you from a distance. Even when you close the distance, his staff doubles as a magic spear for close-quarters fighting. He’ll float around too for his magic attacks, so wait for him to come down before striking.

After bringing his health down, phase two starts. He transforms into a Sephiroth-like Heartless Angel form and goes ballistic with Chaos attacks. The onslaught of attacks is quite the spectacle, but this is the final battle, so steel yourself. Manage your stamina through the attacks, unload on your combos when the opportunity arises, and watch out when those AOE attacks start bombarding the ground.
