In case you missed it, Onimusha is back. After years of dormancy, Capcom announced its intentions to revive the iconic action-adventure series in December, when it revealed Onimusha: Way of the Sword — the first true Onimusha game since 2006.

Not only will there be a new Onimusha game, but it has also been revealed that Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny will be getting the remastered treatment and will be released later this May.

In other words, Onimusha fans are eating good. And now, via a new Famitsu interview with producer Akihito Kadowaki and director Satoru Nihei, more information about Way of the Sword has been revealed, including the game’s length.

The Minish Cap is the best 2D Zelda game, so why doesn’t Capcom make another?

Onimusha Will Be Modern While Remaining True To Its Roots

To start, you will not need to have played any of the past Onimusha titles in order to understand Way of the Sword. “As this is the first new Onimusha game in about 20 years, we have completely re-examined, reinterpreted, and reconstructed the world setting, including the Genma and Oni clans,” Nihei said. “Therefore, there is basically no connection to previous games.”

As far as difficulty is concerned, the game will be challenging but not “extremely difficult,” according to Nihei. Difficulty options haven’t been decided yet, with Kadowaki ecohing the notion of the game not being overtly hard.

Finally, when it comes to game length, Kadowaki noted that they’re aiming for 20 hours, though a final length hasn’t been determined. “I want to make it a satisfying volume for a single action game,” Kadowaki said. “It’s not a game where you defeat the same boss over and over like ‘Monster Hunter,’ so I think it will take about 20 hours to complete.”

That last bit of information would put Way of the Sword in line with previous Onimusha titles. For instance, Demon Siege took 12 hours to beat, while Samurai’s Destiny was about 10 hours. The longest title, Dawn of Dreams, is about 18 hours in length, though it was a lot more difficult. In many ways, it sounds like Way of the Sword is aiming to be a current-gen experience while also paying respect for the series’ roots.
