This week, we finally heard more about the mysterious Zelda movie. We know that it will hit theatres on March 26, 2027, should everything go to plan. This is also being described as a global release date, so we shouldn’t have the same situation as The Super Mario Bros. Movie, where it came to different countries on separate dates.
Now, more details are coming out, as it seems that Nintendo and Sony Pictures have high hopes for Zelda’s film adaptation. As reported by VGC, industry insider Daniel Richtman says that the Zelda movie will be the first in a trilogy, with the cast signing on for a three-picture deal.
Zelda Movie Actors Are Reportedly Signing On For Three Films In Total
This comes from Richtman’s Patreon, in which he makes several claims about the project. Here, he says casting should be wrapped by August, with shooting running from November to next April, which is backed up by a production listing.
He then adds that the actors in “all major roles” will sign on for “three films over six years”. So, we can expect the actors for Zelda and Link at least to appear in the apparent trilogy.
Right now, Nintendo and Sony Pictures have only confirmed that one film is in production. However, given the runaway success of The Super Mario Bros Movie, it would make sense for the studios to prepare a Zelda movie series rather than just stopping at the one.
Also noted by VGC, we now have a synopsis for the film via the aforementioned production listing. As well as seemingly confirming the filming location as New Zealand, we get a basic idea of the plot:
The Legend of Zelda follows Link, a young warrior destined to protect the magical kingdom of Hyrule from the forces of darkness. The land is under threat from Ganon, a ruthless warlord who seeks the Triforce – an ancient relic said to grant limitless power. To stop him, Link must embark on a perilous journey, battling monstrous creatures, exploring treacherous dungeons, and solving intricate puzzles to uncover sacred artifacts that can aid him in his quest.
This is going to be a live-action film, which means seeing the Zelda characters quite differently from how we’ve known them in the games. With that said, if there is any series that can stick the landing here, it’s The Legend of Zelda, since we regularly get different interpretations of the cast, with varying designs and characterisations.
It remains to be seen which games, if any, the film draws the most inspiration from. Director Wes Ball wouldn’t even name his favourite Zelda game out of fear that everyone would assume that’s what the film will centre around, so we’ll just have to wait for news to come out of the project.
