Microprose Picks Up Strategos, The First Real Competitor to Total War’s Mass-Battle Dominance

Microprose has announced it will be publishing upcoming mass-battle RTS Strategos. The storied strategy game publisher announced its distribution partnership with Strategos Games earlier this week (March 27).

Strategos, a real-time tactics strategy game, harkens back to the days of classic Rome: Total War, but with a new lick of paint and some smoother gameplay.

Strategos Has the Potential to Dethrone Total War as the Mass-Battle King

As mentioned, Strategos is a classic tactics wargame set in the classical antiquity – similar to Rome: Total War. The game simulates huge battles with a choice of over 120 factions from antiquity, and over 250 units from the ancient world. These factions include two variations of Sparta (Hellenic and non Hellenic), various flavors of Alexandrian armies and his successor states, Egyptians, Romans, and beyond. At 120 factions it’s a little hard to cover them all without turning this into a big list.

The game will allow players to create custom battles, or take command of historical ones. However, at the moment, there’s no campaign, but the deep strategic gameplay of the base game will doubtless keep players enticed for a long time.

Strategos could be a welcome spark of energy for ancient historical wargame fans, who’ve had little to be excited about as of late. The mishandling of Total War Pharaoh by Creative Assembly, which saw the niche title tilt from a Total War Saga sub-series title to a full release turned many against the Total War developer – especially when many felt that focus had been on the much more commercially successful and popular Total War: Warhammer series.

There’s no solid release date for Strategos, but the release window is 2025. As a result, we may not have to wait too long for this exciting new mass-battle simulator.
