Summary
- 2XKO, formerly known as Project L, will only have 10 playable characters at launch, it’s been revealed.
- In an effort to get the game in players’ hands, the roster will be small, though its developers are touting the potential for more via live-service updates.
- It’s a rather minuscule roster for a 2v2 tag fighting game, and 7 of the 10 members have already been revealed.
Since its launch in 2009, League of Legends has amassed over 150 champions, or playable characters. But if you were hoping that number would translate to Riot’s long-in-development fighter, 2XKO, formerly known as Project L, then think again.
That’s because, in an effort to finally get the game out, it will have a roster of just 10 characters. On its own, it’s a pretty paltry number, but once you factor in that this is also a 2v2 tag fighter, it becomes even more minuscule.
It’s A Live-Service Game, But …
As first spotted by IGN, Riot has confirmed that 10 playable characters will launch with the game, all in an effort to get the game in players’ hands and out of development.
“We know it is a smaller number than you would expect, but when faced with a trade-off of including even more champions resulting in delaying the release date (versus) getting it into your hands sooner, we are excited about the latter,” game director Shaun Rivera said in a Discord Q&A, according to VG247.
Additional comments from Rivera, as transcribed by IGN, reiterate a desire to get the game out at whatever cost. “Honestly, we’d rather just get the game out to y’all to play ASAP,” he said.
Rivera also touted that, with the game being a live-service, free-to-play fighter, that roster will eventually grow — it just won’t be massive at launch.
“So [the] champion train is gonna start once we’re out the door and in your guys’ hands, so we’re gonna start releasing those champions. We’d rather get it to you and do that, instead of just holding it for longer,” Rivera said in a stream, per IGN.
As it stands, only seven of the 10 roster members have been revealed. They are:
- Ahri
- Ekko
- Yasuo
- Darius
- Illaoi
- Braum
- Jinx
In other words, there are still an additional three fighters left to be revealed. With the game still aiming for a 2025 release, that should happen relatively soon. From there, it’ll be fascinating to see how its post-launch support is handled, particularly how quickly the roster can grow.
