Superman is the first movie from the DC Universe after Gunn and Peter Safran took over the leadership of DC Studios and decided to reboot the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). The superhero flick will hit theaters in a little over three months, and expectations are high that it will be one of the best movies of the year. Several have already compared it to Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy, but one of the Superman stars disagreed.

‘It’s Very Jokey’ Scooper Makes Potentially Worrisome Comments About The Tone Of Superman
Another scooper compared James Gunn’s Superman to his previous film and said the tone was “very jokey.”
Anthony Carrigan, who plays Rex Mason (aka Metamorpho) in Superman, addressed the comparison of his upcoming film to Guardians of the Galaxy because both projects reportedly balance action, drama, and comedy. However, for Carrigan’s part, the two films weren’t alike. “I am hesitant to liken it to Guardians, but I do think that [Superman] has the same heart and intelligence,” he explained to The Hollywood Reporter. “That’s James’ trademark. But I think it’s going to be its own thing entirely.” Carrigan described the process they went through for the film as a “special one.” Also, everyone reportedly agreed with how they should approach the film, and he hoped that it would be successfully shown onscreen for the audience to see.
Superman And Guardians Of The Galaxy Probably Won’t Have The Same Tone
Several sources claim that Gunn’s Superman is similar to his previous MCU movie. A Portuguese fan site shared an early reaction from one of its test screenings on X, formerly Twitter. According to the post, Superman’s tone resembles DCEU’s hit film Wonder Woman and the first Guardians of the Galaxy. Movie scooper Jeff Sneider also said something similar in an episode of The Hot Mic. “I’m hearing it’s very Gunn Guardians-like in tone,” the insider said. However, another source who reportedly saw the latest test screening claimed that the film isn’t a comedy but has hilarious scenes.
Additionally, most of what is shown in the trailer is reportedly from the early part of the movie, so most of the story is still concealed. The source also claimed that the rumors about the film were “dead wrong.” This aligns with Carrigan’s statement that the film is not really like Guardians of the Galaxy. Superman being compared to Guardians of the Galaxy has pros and cons. Fans who love the latter’s fun and lighter tone will definitely love Superman if that’s the case. Guardians also features a strong team dynamic, which could be applicable in scenes when Superman works with Krypto the Superdog or Supergirl. Milly Alcock will reportedly make her debut as Supergirl in Superman. Fans will just have to make their own judgment on the film’s tone upon release.
Superman hits theaters on July 11, 2025.
