Z-A’s Jett Could Be a Case of Gen 8 Repeating Itself

Z-A's Jett Could Be a Case of Gen 8 Repeating Itself

The first trailer for Pokemon Legends: Z-A gave fans plenty to talk about, and one character in particular has a familiar feel. Some players have mentioned that Jett, a new character debuting in Pokemon Legends: Z-A might be too similar to a familiar face from the Generation 8 games.

Pokemon fans were delighted as the latest Pokemon Presents finally gave them a proper trailer for Pokemon Legends: Z-A detailing what to expect in the upcoming sequel to Legends: Arceus. Among finally putting to bed speculation about the game’s time period and starter trio, the sneak peak provided a bit more information about Pokemon Legends: Z-A‘s story. Among the new characters who were revealed were Jett, the CEO of Quasartico Inc., and her secretary, Vinnie. Quasartico is the group behind the urbanization of Lumiose City, a plotline that sits at the center of the game. While visually distinct, the pair’s close working relationship and importance in the story have some fans wondering if they are too similar to Sword and Shield’s Chairman Rose and Oleana.

A well-known Nintendo leaker hints at how many new Mega Evolutions will be present in Game Freak’s Pokemon Legends: Z-A spin-off.

Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s New Characters Have Great Potential

The trailer also teased the return of Pokemon X and Y’s AZ, who now runs a hotel in Lumiouse City, as well as the player’s rival character. All the characters revealed for Pokemon Legends Z-A surely have an important role to play, both in terms of gameplay and narrative, but Jett and Vinnie seem to mirror characters from previous generations in a different way. Rose was the chairman of the Galar Pokemon League in Sword and Shield, with Oleana acting as his assistant. This placed them at the center of the player’s story as they took on the gym challenge, just like Jett is bound to be important to the player’s redevelopment efforts in Legends: Z-A.

Rose and Oleana are revealed to be the villains of Sword and Shield in a twist towards the end of the game’s story. The clear similarities between the roles that Rose and Jett hold in their respective titles as famous corporate moguls suggests Jett or Vinnie could be a twist villain in Pokemon Legends: Z-A. As far as theories about Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s story go, this one is quite convincing due to its similarity to past games in the series. It is possible, however, that this similarity is being used as a misdirect in order to disguise the villainous intent of some other character or group.

How Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s Villain can Shake Things Up

Of course, the link between Jett and Chairman Rose is still only a theory, and fans will have to wait until the game’s release to find out if it is true. One thing that can be expected, though, is that Zygarde will most likely be involved in whatever villainous plot emerges. This gives the developers an opportunity to help Legends: Z-A stand apart even if it shares similar story beats with Sword and Shield. With Zygarde’s cell forms confirmed to appear, Legends: Z-A must let players capture Zygarde at its full power. If the player collecting Zygarde’s cells is part of a villain’s plan, it would place the player in a more active role than what players experienced in Rose’s scheme, letting this game explore new themes despite a possible overlap in their choice of antagonist.

Another opportunity to innovate on the Pokemon series is Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s E10+ rating. Previous Pokemon games have all been rated E, but this slightly more adult rating gives the story some leeway to touch on deeper and more advanced themes. It’s generally believed that this rating is because of the new real-time battle system making battles feel a bit more realistic, but developers may have taken advantage of the change in order to spotlight a more serious story than what players are used to.
