There are plenty of ways to navigate between each of the maps in Mudborne, and accessing them is all dependent on your sense of exploration! If you’ve spotted the various boats on the different maps, you’ve likely been curious how you can use them to get around the pond.

After you’ve progressed into the dream world on one of the maps off the Central Junction, you’ll find the door to the docks unlocked. Opening the chest inside provides you with the key you’ll need to use the boats in Mudborne to cross between maps in the blink of an eye.

Access The Docks Around The Pond
As you make your way around the different maps of the main pond in Mudborne, you’ll see a docked ship on each map except for the Central Junction. Unfortunately, even once you’ve reached the ship, you won’t be able to use it for quite a while, so you’ll need to rely on getting around by foot or using the Gateway Nexus to travel between maps.
Since some of the maps are fairly large, it may take you a while to get to the boats around the maps, since a lot of doing so relies on using different elemental changes (like using coolers to freeze a path across water, for instance) or progressing the Compendium’s main story to reach. You can find them in the following places:
- Spawning Pool: In the bottom right corner of the map, accessible by crossing the stepping stones southeast of the Pontoon Pool.
- Kindergarten: In the top right corner of the map, near the Shipping House, which requires a few Filters and a lot of story progression to reach.
- Climate Control: In the bottom right corner of the map, south of the Residential Shipping building. Continue toward the Caretaker Pool from the rightmost climate control machine sensor and use the stepping stones to reach the dock.
- Residential District: You’ll find two boats in the Residential District, with one in the top right corner of the map, as well as the one at the bottom of the map (barely on the Residential District map at all) near the Dockyard building.
The dream world maps for each region of Mudborne are laid out mostly the same, but you’ll find that certain access points (like staircases or bridges) have been rescinded in the dream. Regardless, you can use the waking world maps to get around the dream world variants pretty well until you’ve unlocked those specific maps as well.
Where To Find The Captain’s Key
Before you can use the boat, though, you’ll need to get the key from the Dockyard so that the ship actually starts when you need it to. You’ll first notice the Dockyard when you get to the Residential District, but even once you reach the building itself in the southern part of the map, you’ll find that unfortunately, the door is locked in the waking world.
This means you’ll need to enter the Residential District through the dream world, using the Homeward Bound map to enter the building itself. If you haven’t unlocked the Reflection Pools in the Residential District, you can always enter the dream world at a pool you have unlocked already and use the Gateway Nexus to get back to the Homeward Bound map with ease.
Once you’ve reached the Dockyard, head inside and open the chest you’ll find in the upper corner of the room, which contains the Captain’s Key. An all-purpose key, you can use the Captain’s Key to start any boat you’re able to physically reach by simply getting onto the ship and interacting with it with the left mouse button. The screen wipes black and you’re whisked away!
