The combat in Assassin’s Creed Shadows isn’t particularly deep, with no combos or complicated systems to think about. For the most part, the harder you hit with your attacks, the better. However, there are some additional types of damage some weapons can inflict. They’re called Afflictions.

The Afflictions will be abilities that some weapons have by default. As you attack enemies, you’ll do an additional type of damage, which will cause damage in different ways over time. Each of the Afflictions work in different ways and it’s useful to understand them all.
Bleed
Bleed automatically triggers once the Affliction buildup is reached, which is when the small circle near an enemy’s health bar fills up.
Once the circle is full, you’ll instantly deal a large amount of bleed damage. If you don’t fill the meter up, bleed won’t do anything to the enemy. Therefore, it is mostly useful against powerful enemies with large health bars, such as bosses, guardians, and samurai.
Poison
Poison works a little differently. It is active for a set duration once it is applied and deals light damage over time. The moment you hit an enemy, it starts to inflict damage. Therefore, it is more useful against standard enemies than Bleed.
When applied, it interrupts enemies and causes them to vomit. That allows you to attack them when they’re not able to defend themselves.
While it isn’t the best against bosses, Poison is our favourite Affliction because it starts to deal damage to enemies the moment you begin to attack them.
Daze
Much like Bleed, you need to fill up the Affliction meter by the enemy’s health bar to inflict Daze. When active, the enemy is dazed for a certain amount of time.
With it active, enemies will miss most attacks and won’t be able to defend, which makes the Affliction very useful when faced with groups of enemies.
