Wednesday & Scream Fans Will Want To See Jenna Ortega’s Death Of A Unicorn

Netflix's Wednesday Season 2 Finished Production And Has A New Photo

Summary

  • Jenna Ortega stars in “Death of a Unicorn”, an unconventional, quirky horror comedy written and directed by Alex Scharfman.
  • A24’s “Death of a Unicorn” features a talented cast, including Ortega, Paul Rudd, Will Poulter, Téa Leoni, and Richard E. Grant.
  • Ortega’s character in “Death of a Unicorn”, Riley, is similar to Tara Carpenter from “Scream” – both strong, confident characters in unusual situations.

Scream and Wednesday fans know Jenna Ortega chooses engaging roles and that her characters are always strong-willed, smart, and sure of themselves. Tara Carpenter and Wednesday Addams would rather rebel than fit in and have a similarly sharp, dark sense of humor. Ortega’s other interesting parts include drummer Skye Willow in Studio 666 and Vada Cavell in the 2021 drama The Fallout. But fans can be sure that if Ortega is attached to a project, it’s going to stand out from the crowd.

While fans anticipate Wednesday season 2’s 2025 release and also hope for a season 3, they’ll want to see Jenna Ortega’s latest movie, which is about to be released in theaters. It’s an unconventional story that doesn’t sound like any other movie, and it also has a great cast of talented actors.

Jenna Ortega And Paul Rudd’s A24 Comedy Horror Movie Death Of A Unicorn Looks Hilarious And Memorable

Ridley (Jenna Ortega) in Death of a Unicorn

Jenna Ortega co-stars with Paul Rudd in A24’s Death of a Unicorn, a quirky and unique horror comedy that was written and directed by Alex Scharfman. Ortega plays Riley Kintner, a teenager who is driving with her dad Elliot (Rudd) to a retreat put on by the pharmaceutical company he works at when they run into a unicorn. They put the unicorn in the backseat of their car and continue on to the retreat. As is shown in the trailer, the company wants to use the unicorn, and Elliot and Ridley go on a strange and intense ride.

A24 is known for dark horror movies like Hereditary, Midsommar, and X, and the recent release Opus starring Ayo Edebiri. Ortega’s Death of a Unicorn is a more whimsical and weird tale, which is exactly why it looks so interesting. The movie also stars Will Poulter, Téa Leoni, and Richard E. Grant.

Death of a Unicorn will appeal to Wednesday fans since both Ortega projects are darkly funny stories where Ortega’s character is an outsider who finds herself in an odd and unexpected situation. While Ridley is helping her dad Elliot figure out what to do with a unicorn, Wednesday Addams has become a student at Nevermore Academy while looking for the Hyde Monster in season 1. Then, in Wednesday season 2, she looks for her stalker.

Death of a Unicorn will also be perfect for Scream fans who enjoyed watching Ortega’s character Tara Carpenter in Scream (2022) and Scream 6. From the trailer, it looks like Ortega’s Death of a Unicorn character, Ridley, has a few things in common with Tara. Both are strong, tough, confident characters who don’t care about fitting in and who are trying to solve a mystery and get out alive.

In an interview with Gizmodo.com, Scharfman, who directed the short film Passing Thru and produced the 2024 Blumhouse horror movie House of Spoils, talked about his inspiration for the movie. He said he thought of the idea and wondered “What if someone hits a unicorn with their car?” He continued:

“At the time, no, it was before actors or characters—it was a scenario. And I didn’t know what was going on or where they were going or what it was; [it was] just something that stuck out in my mind. It took me a couple of years to even start exploring it.”

Death of a Unicorn will be released in theaters on March 28th, 2025.

What Did Jenna Ortega Say About Starring In Death Of A Unicorn?

Ridley (Jenna Ortega) talking to a unicorn in Death of a Unicorn

In an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on March 25th, 2025, Jenna Ortega talked about filming Wednesday season 2 with Lady Gaga and also talked about Death of a Unicorn. She mentioned the film’s memorable name and said:

“The title is pretty self-explanatory.”

In one scene from the movie, Ortega’s character points out that the creature is a unicorn and also swears. Since it’s such a memorable line, it’s no wonder that it’s used in the trailer. In an interview with FOX 32, Ortega answered a question about whether she could tell that her line would be used in the Death of a Unicorn trailer. She said:

“When I’m shooting a film, when I’m on set, I’m thinking of the edit — and I don’t necessarily want to assume. You have a pretty good idea doing it for 12, 13 years — what they want and what they’re looking for. I don’t really think about the promotional aspect of jobs, so I’m always surprised with that they end up putting in a trailer. I was just hoping they wouldn’t give anything away.”
