The Sandman Season 2 Casts Third Actor To Play One Important Character

The Sandman Season 2 Casts Third Actor To Play One Important Character

Summary

  • The Sandman’s second season in 2025 will be the final one, wrapping up Morpheus and the Endless’s journey.
  • Netflix won’t continue the series past two seasons due to showrunner decisions, ending a successful adaptation.
  • Season 2 adds new cast members like Will Keen as a possible older Shakespeare, enhancing the dream world’s journey.

The Sandman is returning in 2025 for what will be the second and final season of the drama series. As with all good dreams, the journey of Morpheus and the Endless will come to an end this year, and with it, bring the epic fantasy Netflix series to a close after only two seasons. The comic book adaptation was a huge success when it premiered in 2022 and, since then, Neil Gaiman’s pivotal DC graphic novel series has been getting the attention it deserves.

However, despite the excitement for the upcoming episodes, Netflix will not continue to adapt the long-running comic adventure into a Season 3, as The Sandman showrunner, Allan Heinberg, previously confirmed that the show was only ever going to run for two seasons with Dream being the focus rather than diving into other characters from the source material. The cancelation of the series comes on the heels of sexual harassment allegations against creator Neil Gaiman, who has since left Amazon’s final season of Good Omens TV adaptation and has also been dropped by his longtime comic book publisher, Dark Horse. Season 2 of The Sandman will certainly be a bittersweet one for fans, but as its next and final chapter approaches this year, the show’s cast member list is steadily increasing.

The Sandman Season 2 Casts Its Third Actor To Play William Shakespeare

The Sandman season 2

According to Redanian Intelligence, which is known for its insight into shows like Netflix’s The Witcher, The Sandman Season 2 has cast actor Will Keen, known for his roles in The Crown and His Dark Materials, as the show’s third William Shakespeare character. Season 1 of The Sandman welcomed fans to a young version of Shakespeare, who was played by Samuel Blenkin, and for The Sandman Season 2, it was previously announced that Luke Allen-Gale would play the adult version of Shakespeare. Now, it seems as though Keen may play a much older Shakespeare in Season 2 as Morpheus meets the historical character at different stages of his life throughout the series.

In Gaiman’s comics, which ran from 1989 to 1996, William Shakespeare made an appearance in issue #13, titled Men of Good Fortune, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and in #19, The Tempest. The A Midsummer Night’s Dream issue actually won a Hugo for best short story, which was the only time an individual issue of a comic has won the prestigious award. However, in the comics, Shakespeare doesn’t appear to Morpheus three times and this is something that the show’s creators have included in its story arc.

The production for The Sandman season two went underway in June 2023 at the Shepperton Studios in the UK but, due to the SAG-AFTRA strikes, the series was put on pause a month later. Thankfully, things started to pick up again in November 2024 as fans’ minds were put to rest that production had indeed resumed once again. With a host of great additions to The Sandman season two, which includes a “hot-tempered” Norse god played by Laurence O’Fuarain, the dream world’s return is getting more exciting.

The Sandman Season 2’s final season is scheduled to premiere on Netflix sometime in 2025.
