Remove all the creatures, monsters, and sci-fi elements and it’s a moving story about friendship and family. But, of course, villains like Jamie Campbell Bower’s Vecna are what make every episode impossible to look away from.
While fans wait to see Stranger Things season 5, which the Duffer Brothers confirmed is coming at some point in 2025, they can check out an upcoming sci-fi movie that sounds excellent. Stranger Things Fans Will Love Watch The Skies, Which Uses Technology In A Unique Way
Sci-fi and Stranger Things fans will enjoy the upcoming movie Watch the Skies from Flawless and XYZ Films. The trailer is compelling as, right away, the main character Denise (Denise (Inez Dahl Torhaug) says “I don’t feel normal” and she is told:
“You mean it’s not normal to think your father was kidnapped by aliens?”
From the Watch the Skies trailer, it’s clear that Denise is like a brave Stranger Things character who is trying to make sense of their changing world. The alien-focused sci-fi movie is an exciting story about a teenager who tries to find out if aliens abducted her father while teaming up with rebellious characters who don’t fit in. Watch the Skies has many beloved Stranger Things elements, including quirky characters who are underdogs and who band together when others don’t support them. While many movies focus on the gruesome aliens themselves, from the creatures in the Godzilla franchise to the beloved Alien films, Watch the Skies is all about Denise’s journey to learn more about her dad and find herself in the process. This strong character development will appeal to Stranger Things fans who can’t get enough of scrappy and charming Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), smart Max Mayfield (Sadie Sink), and all the other great members of the Party, along with the memorable adult characters.
Watch the Skies not only looks great and has an engaging premise that promises adventure, but it also has a cool behind-the-scenes story. The movie is Swedish, and the English version was dubbed in an interesting way. Flawless, an AI company, employed AI for “visual dubbing” using the movie’s actors. According to Variety, AI was used to ensure that the speech sounds good and that the actors’ mouths move in a natural way. This was done in compliance with SAG-AFTRA rules, which is great to hear. The dubbing will make for a better moviegoing experience since it doesn’t involve subtitles.
It’s always fascinating to learn about the visual effects used in sci-fi storytelling, and in a behind-the-scenes promotional video for Watch the Skies, the producers explain more about the unique way the movie was made. The video compares scenes from the Swedish and English versions of the movie and audiences can see that the dubbing is natural and seamless.
Watch the Skies producer Albin Pettersson said in the video:
“The Swedish language is a barrier when you want to reach out around the world. We were contacted by the guys at Flawless to take the movie and make a new version of it in English… but not a dubbed English version.”
When Is The Release Date For The Sci-Fi Movie Watch The Skies?
Watch the Skies will be released on May 9th, 2025 and, according to Variety, it will play on 100 AMC Theaters screens.
Producer Albin Pettersson, who co-founded Crazy Pictures, talked about Watch the Skies in an interview with Nordisk Film & TV Fond. Pettersson shared that the movie was inspired by an alien-focused documentary, Ghost Rockets, which focused on a group called UFO Sverige. He said of Denise:
“She looks for her dad and meets this new bunch of people at UFO Sweden who become her family.”
Pettersson continued:
“But indeed, our intention was never to do an alien invasion movie, with space ships… UFO Sweden combines everything we love – suspense, comedy elements and sci- spectacular parts from our favourite films and series. We were inspired for instance by Stranger Things for the hopeful tone, group of kids and cool elements. But of course, Steven Spielberg’s E.T., Close Encounters of the Third Kind and J.J. Abrams’ Super 8 were big inspirations.”
