Neil Druckmann Continues To Downplay A Last Of Us Part 3: "Can't Guarantee It"

Summary

  • Neil Druckmann has continued to cast doubt on a potential The Last of Us Part 3.
  • In a new interview, Druckmann reiterated past comments, adding he “can’t guarantee” a third title.
  • The comments and tone continue to point towards a reality where a third TLOU title doesn’t happen.

A few weeks ago, in early March, Neil Druckmann, who is the studio head at Naughty Dog and who has served as the creative director on both The Last of Us titles, made waves when he said “don’t bet on there being more of ‘Last of Us.’ This could be it.”

A few weeks later, Druckmann was once again asked about the future of the franchise, and if you were hoping to hear a change in tune, well, not much has changed, leaving the possibility of a third game feeling as bleak as ever.

There Are No Guarantees

As first spotted by GamesRadar, in an interview with Etalk during a red carpet presser, Druckmann once again threw cold water on another game, largely echoing the same words he said in early March.

Citing his work on previous games (The Last of Us Part 2, Uncharted 4) having definitive endings on account of not knowing he would get the opportunity to work on a sequel, Druckmann had this to say:

“For there to be another one, another thing, another project, so many stars have to align, I can’t guarantee it.”

It’s not exactly “don’t bet on it” levels of no, but it does seem like Druckmann is, in not so certain words, preparing fans for the possibility that there won’t be another game.

Speaking of the future, Druckmann said his “focus” is on the upcoming Season 2 of the HBO show, and “if HBO renews us” then it’ll shift to Season 3, along with his work on Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, Naughty Dog’s latest game that was revealed in December.

On the subject of Intergalactic, don’t expect that game anytime soon, either. Recent reporting suggests the game won’t release until 2027 at the earliest. That would further push the timeline of a potential third TLOU game, making things feel as bleak as ever.
