Summary
- MTG’s SpongeBob Secret Lair has bonus cards.
- Collectors have discovered a pineapple command tower, and a Fred dismember card in their drops.
- There’s a chance there’s at least one more bonus card that hasn’t been discovered yet.
Magic: The Gathering‘s SpongeBob SquarePants Secret Lair went on sale earlier this week. That means the cards are starting to show up at people’s houses for those who were lucky enough to land them, and much like the Secret Lairs to have come before it, there are bonus cards waiting to be discovered.
Collectors have been sharing images of their SpongeBob Secret Lairs left and right, revealing that there are at least two bonus cards to be on the look out for. Shared on the r/magicTCG subreddit by u/Scoruge, those cards are reskinned versions of Command Tower and Dismember. Given suitable SpongeBob themes, the Command Tower is SpongeBob’s Pineapple home with Gary peeking out the front door, and the Dismember card is a reference to Fred, a background character best known for repeatedly hurting his leg.

MTG’s SpongeBob Secret Lair was divided into three subsets – Legends of Bikini Bottom which focuses on characters, Internet Sensation which turns SpongeBob memes into MTG cards, and Lands Under The Sea which focuses on iconic locations. You’d think the Pineapple card would be a part of the Lands set, and Fred the bonus in the Internet Sensations, but that doesn’t necessarily appear to be the case.

Who Lives In A Command Tower Under The Sea?
A separate post on the r/magicTCG subreddit courtesy of u/McFreddieMercury claims they got the Pineapple Command Tower as a bonus card with their Internet Sensation cards. That might mean the bonus cards have been assigned at random. It might also mean there’s a third bonus card out there waiting to be discovered. For now, we only know of two for sure, but a third would make sense due to there being three categories.
Those of you familiar with MTG’s Secret Lairs will have been waiting to see what its SpongeBob bonus cards were going to be. Secret Lairs tend to include unrevealed cards that aren’t discovered until players get their hands on them. Last year’s Marvel Secret Lair, for example, had a related Groot bonus card in each drop. Cards featuring Groot in Iron Man’s armor, being watered by Storm-made rain, and sitting on Black Panther’s shoulder were among them.
Whether you like SpongeBob now being a part of MTG or not, the cartoon character’s Secret Lair was seemingly as popular as most of the other crossovers to have come before it. Everything from the first drop has sold out, and demand was so high that MTG’s website struggled under the pressure.
