Summary
- Kingdom Hearts fans have been starving for a long time now, but today’s anniversary had many hoping for an update.
- Square did celebrate the series’ 23rd birthday, but not with any news on the upcoming games.
- Instead, it shared a “nothing” tease about the origin of the Paopu fruit’s name.
As we all pretty much expected, Square Enix didn’t give us any new information on Kingdom Hearts 4 or Missing Link for the series’ 23rd anniversary, but that hasn’t stopped fans from being disappointed.
Today, March 28, marks the 23rd anniversary of Kingdom Hearts, a series that is near and dear to many of our, pardon the pun, hearts. While it should be a time for celebration and excitement, the series has been so quiet over the past few years that it’s a little hard to do anything but hope for more information about the next big projects.

With Kingdom Hearts 3 turning six, I’m once again thinking about the game’s mistranslations and how they affect Riku.
Even though it’s been far more than 1,000 days since Kingdom Hearts 4 was announced, that reveal did take place during the series’ 20th anniversary and sparked some hope that this year might see something, anything, new as well. While that was the case, it’s not exactly what we were all expecting.
Kingdom Hearts Celebrates Its Anniversary With A Cryptic And “Nothing” Message
Over on the official Kingdom Hearts Twitter, a message was shared from Tetsuya Nomura to celebrate the series’ 23rd anniversary. That might have you hoping for some kind of update on Missing Link or KH4, but the statement was actually focused on the iconic and plot-important Paopu fruit.
In the post, Tetsuya Nomura is asked if there are any “untold stories” about the Paopu fruit, which leads to him teasing that it’s actually named after “Paradise of Pure” instead of “Paradise of Promise” like we all assumed. Fittingly, Nomura then ends the statement by cheekily saying, “I guess there are no particular untold stories”.
I, and pretty much every other Kingdom Hearts fan, will almost always be happy to hear from Nomura, but considering the lack of updates on two big projects for the series, the random tease does feel a little disappointing. That’s clearly the sentiment being shared by Kingdom Hearts fans, as the comments are pretty much all agreeing that it’s “nothing” and unsatisfying after so long.
One of the most poignant responses to the tease comes from Kingdom Hearts content creator ligero_miguel, who said, “I understand there must be a reason for this lack of news, but it’s really starting to hurt. I don’t need a trailer, just a small update on how things are going or some kind of comment on the new games, like they do with FFVII Remake Part 3”. Couldn’t have put it better myself.
