Between the heavily-armed robots, trigger-happy soldiers, and murderous outlaws, it’s easy to forget that some of Atomfall‘s most dangerous enemies can be simple rats. Changed by the strange powers permeating the Quarantine Zone, swarms of rats are aggressive, territorial, and in many cases deadly.
If you hear squeaking nearby in Atomfall, you’re in danger. Rats can use their numbers to take you down just as surely as human or mechanical enemies, and until you find and destroy their nest they’ll just keep coming. This guide has everything you need to know about dealing with these ravenous rodents.
How To Fight A Rat Swarm In Atomfall
Guns aren’t much use against swarms; even if your accuracy is perfect, each bullet you fire will only kill a single rat. Instead, you need to rely on explosives to take out lots of rats at once, or use a fast melee weapon like a knife or even your fists to quickly clear them out at close range.
The best way to fight off a swarm of any type, by far, is the Explosive Lure. It works like a grenade, but uses a scent to attract swarms to it before detonating. Not only does this keep them from attacking you, but it groups the creatures together to ensure that it blasts as many of them as possible.
You can find the recipe to craft Explosive Lures in the giant wicker effigy in western Casterfell Woods, at 20.4E, 89.2N.
If you don’t have an Explosive Lure, the next best thing is a Molotove Cocktail or Poison Bomb. These both leave areas of flame and toxic gas, respectively, that the rats will rush into and die; that way, even the ones that you don’t catch in the initial explosion will still succumb as they attempt to reach you.

Infection sounds pretty bad, especially in a post-apocalyptic game like Atomfall, but it also connects to the lore in fascinating ways.
How To Destroy Rat Nests
Rats, unlike other swarms,
continuously spawn from nearby nests. Destroying the nests is the only way to stop their onslaught.
Swarms will also stop chasing you once you leave their territory, so fleeing is always an option.
Nests can be identified by the bright blue Oberite stones inside them, though they’re often tucked into corners and other hidden areas. The best way to find a nest is simply to watch the direction that the rats are coming from, and follow the swarm back to the source.
Where there’s one nest, there’s often another, so keep hunting for nests until the rats stop attacking completely.
Nests don’t take much damage to destroy, so a melee attack or thrown weapon should do the trick; wasting a bullet or a bomb should only be considered in truly dire circumstances. Keep an eye on your health while in a rat-infested area, too. Rats individually don’t deal much damage, but together they can wear you down.
Rats inflict Poison with their bites, but it’s in such small quantities that you’ll usually succumb to the damage from their attacks before you actually start suffering from the status effect. It might pay to have an Antidote with you just in case.
