Malcolm In The Middle is finally making a return after almost two decades away from TV, and the star most excited to make a return to the show has given some new details regarding how the original show’s characters have changed over the years.
Malcolm In The Middle was an early 2000s fan favorite, giving viewers a glance into the lives of a dysfunctional working-class family. The show leaned on its great cast as well as its solid comedy, including iconic Hollywood star Bryan Cranston, who played the titular character’s father, Hal. The show aired between 2000 and 2006 for 151 episodes over seven successful seasons, making history as the first single-camera sitcom without a live audience or laugh track. Since then, Cranston has gone on to make an even bigger splash as the iconic protagonist of Breaking Bad, Walter White. Since the show ended, he’s also returned to the role in Better Call Saul alongside Aaron Paul.

Bryan Cranston is one of the most celebrated actors thanks to roles like Walter White in Breaking Bad, but he’s also had great voice performances.
While he confirmed that he’s done with Walter White post-Better Call Saul, Cranston is going full speed ahead to reprise another iconic role: Hal from Malcolm In The Middle. The show was recently confirmed to return with a new revival, and fans are eager to hear more about it. On the carpet ahead of Variety and Apple TV+’s “The Studio” screening and Q&A, Cranston was asked about and gave more details on the reboot, a project that Cranston confirms he’s been pushing for a while. “I’ve been trying to get this going for 12 years. I was the one poking the bear, going, ‘Let’s do it, let’s do it, let’s do it,’” Cranston revealed. “Finally, Linwood Boomer, our creator of the show, got tired of me poking him. He came up with some really fun, terrific ideas. So, it’s funny [and] heartfelt. You are reintroduced to this family. We left the airwaves 20 years ago. All the boys are adults with their own children,” he said. “It’s a different dynamic in that sense — and yet, do things really change with Hal and Lois? I don’t know that they do!”
Cranston’s desire to return to Malcolm in the Middle has absolutely been out in the open for ages, and fans of the actor must be glad he finally got his wish. While the series order from Disney is for just four episodes, that’ll be more than enough for the talented cast to make some magic with. Cranston was even open to a Malcolm In The Middle movie if there was a good idea on the table. With such a small episode count, the upcoming revival isn’t too far off, but there’s always potential for Disney to order more if the upcoming installment goes well. For now, fans will get to see Frankie Muniz’s Malcolm return home with his daughter in tow for his parents’ 40th wedding anniversary and all the hijinks that are sure to ensue from that. Most of the original cast will be returning to play appropriately aged-up versions of their original characters, but Erik Per Sullivan’s Dewey has been recast due to Sullivan’s retirement from acting. Fargo star Caleb Ellsworth-Clark will be taking on the role instead.
Fans are still analyzing the little details from the original show, and they’re just as fervent to get some new material to dig into. The new show is sure to be a treat for the hardcore fans and bring new fans into the fold as well, which will certainly be good for Disney’s streaming numbers. For now, viewers will have to wait and see what the new dynamic will be when the show finally returns after almost two decades.
