Xenoblade Chronicles X was only the second game in the series and Monolith Soft took some big swings for this game on the Wii U. Instead of focusing on another epic story with a central protagonist, they allowed players to customize their own character. It’s the only Xeno game to have this feature, making it standout from every other one.

New Characters And Story Beats
Hello Cut Content
When remasters or remakes are announced, fans hope they are more than the original experience. Will the game feature new content or perhaps cut content from the original game? For Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition, the answer is yes as things mentioned in the art book for the original game have made it into the remaster from new characters to areas to story beats. Detailing anything more would be a bit of a spoiler as most new content is in the later half of the game, but suffice it to say there are some cool things for fans who played the original all the way back in 2015. The game is absolutely massive, so it may take a while.

Character Redesigns
Now With More Anime
Fans who haven’t touched the original game since it launched on the Wii U in 2015 may experience Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition like it was just a crisper version. While that is true, there is a big change hiding in plain sight: the character models. When Monolith Soft made Xenoblade Chronicles and Xenoblade Chronicles X, they made the characters look a bit more realistic albeit with some anime characteristics. In Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Xenoblade Chronicles 3, and remasters of their past games including Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition, characters are full-blown anime characters. It’s the opposite of what they did between the first and second Xenosaga games that went from anime to realistic and it’s a better look to help this remaster stand out.

Combat Improvements
Quick Cooldowns
Combat is something that can be hard to get used in the original game and this remaster. There are no difficulty levels unlike most RPGs and there are many complex systems to learn from combos to cooldowns. While the remaster will still take a bit to get used to, with many deaths to follow, there is one big improvement that will help the flow of combat: Quick Cooldowns.

On the right side of the ability roster, there is a new meter. Players can use Quick Cooldowns to immediately reuse an ability which is handy if players to new get a quick combo in or to heal in Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition.

The Map And Exploring
From Time Changes To Surveys
The world map was not exactly easy to traverse when selecting survey points or fast travel points in the original game but there have been improvements in Xenoblade Chronicles X Definitive Edition. The world map is laid out in a hexagonal format and most of the UI was handled on the Wii U’s GamePad but that has been better integrated into the Switch’s system to make it less of a hassle to navigate. Also, players no longer have to find a rest point to change time as they can do it in the menu. Certain quests and monsters require day or night along with weather patterns. That’s why the change is so well appreciated in the remake.

Party Changes
Switch Anytime
Another menu change comes in the form of gathering a party. Besides the customized character, players can bring three party members along for missions. Before, players had to find these party members in town, New Los Angeles, and that was not a fun experience to have especially while exploring. Now, like most RPGs, players can go into the menu and swap out party members whenever they want in Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition. The only exception is during battle or certain story situations but overall this is a huge deal.
2
Level Cap Raise
And Non-Party Characters Gain EXP
It was a bit strange that the level capped at sixty in the original release but it has since been raised to the standard nineties. It also feels less like a chore to level up, bringing characters to higher levels faster. Also, party members not participating in battle can still level up.

Getting In And Out Of Online
Not Quite An MMO
Nintendo has never been perfect when it comes to their online integration with its systems compared to Sony and Microsoft consoles but the Switch is their best attempt yet. In Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition, players can connect online to see avatars of players on the server who can be recruited temporarily to aid in battle. It’s fun to see characters from other players pop in, especially if they have gone to great lengths to make their heroes look like characters from other RPGs like Squall from Final Fantasy 8. There are four-player co-op missions too and overall the connectivity is better.
