Outertale is probably one of the most interesting fangames based on Undertale, as it changes the setting of the Underground for a space setting and all the characters have star-themed attires, attacks and music themes.

That said, even with all the changes applied, the official canon of Outertale follows very closely that of Undertale’s, with the only exception being that when the monsters lost the war, they were not banished to the Underground, but to space instead. The Pacifist, Neutral and Genocide routes apply in the game as well, and each character has a very similar personality as in the original. The game was inspired by a comic published on November 14, 2015, by author Mimi Pippinski. While Outertale might not have the same number of neutral endings as Undertale, it still manages to deliver a very enjoyable experience to those who loved the original game it’s based on and the entertaining mechanics present in it.

The design of Understory retains several elements from the original Undertale. However, it takes a few liberties, adding a more colorful palette and arguably more detailed characters that players can appreciate as they progress through the game. While it doesn’t look as similar to the games in the Pokémon franchise, it does have a few traits that could trick players into thinking they’re exploring a town in the Hoenn region. There’s no denying that the original Undertale has a lot more impactful quotes and will likely never be matched by any fangames due to the phenomenon it was in its day. However, even then, Understory is a great title that any fan of this universe should try.

The game mechanics are very similar to those already available on Undertale. However, this title does implement a few things of its own that make it very interesting. Even the combat mechanics feel similar, as players can either choose to defeat monsters through the use of violence or by going on a more pacifist route.

Undertale Yellow also features various quality-of-life improvements over the original Undertale, some of which are also present in Undertale’s spiritual successor, Deltarune. All in all, while Undertale remains king in its category, it’s hard to deny that Undertale Yellow has a lot to offer players who have fallen in love with the original game since it was first released.
