Some characters in anime are so funny that every time they appear on-screen, they are almost guaranteed to make you laugh. Not all of the ones included on the list come from comedy series, as even the darkest stories can have some of the most hilarious written characters. The magical thing about anime is that it can mix these two things without making the show look cheesy or forced.

A character can be funny in many ways. Some are always goofy, doing silly things, while others have a more serious counterpart that gives them a big contrast when they make jokes.

Sasha Braus

Attack On Titan

Sasha is a goof who loves nothing more than to eat delicious food, particularly meat-based dishes. Her very first introduction in Attack on Titan shows her eating a potato in an important assembly. She even volunteers to share the potato with the instructor in the funniest way possible.

For a world that’s full of tragedy and Titans wanting to eat humans, Sasha is your only source of laughter. Surprisingly, her food gimmick never seems to get old. She always finds new ways to lighten the mood and put a smile on everyone’s face, even in a time of sadness.

7

Ryunosuke Tanaka

Haikyu!!

Tanaka is a hilarious volleyball player from a sports anime called Haikyu. You usually expect comic relief characters to have the most obnoxious reactions to situations, but Tanaka achieves inner peace and becomes a Buddha instead. The gimmick doesn’t seem nearly as funny when explained, but it’s executed in such a way that it would make almost everyone laugh out loud.

These (usually) small, winged folk appear in all sorts of shows.

It’s not overused either — Tanaka certainly has his fair share of obnoxious reactions. But when you least expect it, Tanaka achieves inner peace and puts on the most peaceful face you could possibly imagine.

6

Arataka Reigen

Mob Psycho 100

Reigen is a fake psychic who gets rid of evil spirits for his customers. The way he performs his “exorcisms” and the lengths he goes to convince everyone of his incredible psychic abilities is hilarious, and it gets especially funny when he comes face to face with some real evil spirits. Plus, he has some of the best one-liners in the show.

At first glance, he may seem like an exploitative person, but he’s a complex character who is very kind deep down. Plus, with Mob by his side, he manages to do some legit psychic work and save many people’s lives.

5

Anya Forger

Spy X Family

Anya is a toddler with the special power to read people’s minds. This brings her a unique personality for a child that is both cute and funny to watch. She also has some of the best reactions and expressions that are guaranteed to make you laugh. Because of her imaginative nature, she interprets real scenarios in the most dramatic ways possible.

Anya often tries to impress Loid and Yor, which usually fails but almost always ends in a wholesome way. Her love for peanuts and spies never gets old either, adding to her already hilarious lines. Anya is the type of character who is unintentionally funny but is universally loved because of it.

4

Mamoru Takamura

Hajime No Ippo

Takamura is a genius fighter from the boxing anime Hajime no Ippo. He’s not your average comic relief character — Takamura has an ego that is impossible to measure no matter how much you try. He usually makes inappropriate jokes and puns that somehow land in the most hilarious way possible.

Because of his ego, he also talks a lot of smack. But every time he gets in the ring, he backs up every single word he says. This makes him just as charismatic as he is funny. While not the most humble boxer, deep down, Takamura is a kind person who cares for his friends.

3

Yu Ishigami

Kaguya Sama: Love Is War

Ishigami is a reserved character who usually avoids interactions with people outside his group of friends. However, even if he’s comfortable around some people, it doesn’t change his social awkwardness, leading to hilarious moments.

The thing that makes Ishigami stand out is his nonchalant and unaware behavior. He’s not trying to be funny whatsoever, but he ends up delivering the funniest moments. Later on, Ishigami’s rivalry with Iino Miko also adds some spice to the student council dynamic.

2

Kazuma Satou

KonoSuba

KonoSuba is one of the best comedy anime out there, mainly because it’s a parody of the Isekai genre. Kazuma does a great job of being the face of a series that makes fun of other Isekai because he is not some noble hero or strong character: Kazuma is rude, weak, and fails in the most ridiculous ways possible.

Out of everything, the funniest thing about Kazuma is his relationship with Aqua. He has a “sweet spot” for girls (if we want to put it that way). But that doesn’t apply to Aqua whatsoever. Kazuma is always belittling and arguing with her. Of course, Aqua argues back, and it creates some of the funniest moments in anime.

1

Gintoki Sakata

Gintama

It’s only natural that the funniest anime character comes from the king of comedy, Gintama. It’s almost impossible to put into words how humorous Gintoki and Gintama are. Gintoki is an amazing character who is both goofy and wise at the same time. Unlike most other Shonen protagonists, Gintoki is in his late twenties. He’s generally lazy, does odd jobs, and notoriously has dead fish eyes.

Gintoki also loves to parody other series, with many hilarious references spread throughout Gintama. The show is so brilliant that nearly any character in Gintama could be argued to be the funniest in all of anime.
