Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition features a sprawling world on a scale not seen elsewhere in the series, and with that comes quite a lot of quests. These side missions make up the bulk of the game content, with a much greater focus on individual stories versus a single grand one.

Wondering about Segment Recon and world exploration in Xenoblade Chronicles X?
One of those many quests is A Proper Chopper, which tasks you with finding and repairing a Blade helicopter that went missing in Noctilum. Except it’s run into a bit more trouble than expected, and no one involved has the needed repair expertise. So it’s up to you to get them out of there, hopefully all in one piece.
How To Unlock The A Proper Chopper Mission
Many of the missions in Xenoblade Chronicles X are connected to your story progress. You’ll rarely fully miss out on a quest, but many of them won’t be unlocked until you’ve completed prior quests, or reached far enough in the story. In the case of A Proper Chopper, you need to have first completed Chapter Four, The Ganglion Menace.
After this mission is completed, you can pick up A Proper Chopper in one of two ways. You can either naturally come across Roscoe in the Industrial District of NLA, or you can pick up the Find the Freighter Basic Mission from the Mission Control center. Both will still bring you to Roscoe, and he will be marked on the Segment Recon screen as well.
Collecting The Items To Repair The Helicopter
After speaking with Roscoe, he will tell you about Ciska and Howard. Their helicopter went down in the middle of a mission, and with how the two of them are always at each others throats, he feels it better to save them sooner rather than later in case they end up killing each other first. He sends you to the Sunlit Grove in Noctilum, where you previously fought the Ganglion.
Once you get there, the pair are arguing even when being surrounded by indigens. Defeat them and tell them you’re here to rescue them. Hateful of each other as they are, they will talk to you in turns, with Howard coming out first. He asks you to find some materials to repair the helicopter, two Anhydrous Radiators from Primordia, and a single Spherical EM Motor in Noctilum.
The Anhydrous Radiators you might already have, but they’re very common across Primordia and will be marked exactly where they can be found on the map. The Spherical EM Motor is a bit rarer, located deeper in Noctilum than you might have already gone. They will also be marked on the map, though may require going more out of your way to rech than normal. They can specifically be found in Weeping Whitewood in the north.
If you need a bit more help in finding its exact location, highlight it from the Navigation Panel and use the Follow Ball to bring you to its exact location.
Repairing The Helicopter
Return with the parts and it will now be Ciska who’s come out to chat. She’ll thank you for getting the parts, but will say that she doesn’t actually know how to do the repairs and requests you do it in her place. It can’t be that hard, she claims. Except the choice you make here is critical to how the mission ends.
When approaching the helicopter, you have the option to repair either the blue or red wire. If you choose the blue wire, the helicopter is repaired successfully and both Howard and Ciska make it safely back to NLA to meet up with Roscoe. If you instead repair the red wire, the helicopter seems to be in fine working order, but hits a malfunction on the way back, causing Howard’s death.
Both endings offer slightly different reward. If you repair the blue wire, both Ciska and Howard live and get an updated link in the Affinity Chart, but you only get 10,000 credits. If you repair the red wire, Howard dies but you instead get 20,000 credits. No matter which ending you get, you still get the common rewards of 180 EXP, and the Meredith Light holofigures for the Blade Barracks. If you’re feeling particularly cruel, allowing Howard to die does lead to a higher payout, though his life is hardly worth only an extra 10,000 credits.
If you were wondering how you could possibly know the blue wire is the correct one to repair, there is actually a bit of background dialogue you can overhear in the Administrative District that explicitly tells you as such. This is saved in the Info panel in the menu.
