Every time Pokemon opens pre-orders for its next TCG expansion, it’s chaos at the Pokemon Center. Even more so with each passing set, or at least that’s how it feels, and this week’s Destined Rivals drop may have been the worst yet. So bad that days later, The Pokemon Company has issued a statement to let fans know it’s aware of the situation, and that it wants to remedy it.
Shared by Serebii’s Joe Merrick, the statement begins by confirming Pokemon is aware fans have experienced difficulties buying its TCG products as of late. It’s confirmation of how it plans to remedy that will be a silver lining for Pokemon fans who were left empty-handed after everything in its upcoming Destined Rivals set quickly sold out earlier this week.

“We are actively working to print more of the impact TCG products as quickly as possible and at maximum capacity to acknowledge this,” the statement reads. TPC notes that affected products will be available through the Pokemon Center and other participating retailers, but doesn’t go as far as confirming when exactly that will happen, just “as soon as possible”.

On top of that, Pokemon commits to making more products available in future TCG sets as soon as they’re released. It aims to do that by “maximising production to increase product availability upon release.” Again, it retreads the same ground when discussing future releases, vowing to replenish stock as quickly as possible everywhere its TCG products are sold as quickly as it can.
Pokemon addressing there’s a problem, and seemingly trying to put measures in place to make sure its TCG products are readily available and end up in the right hands, is ultimately a good thing. Seeing these actions work in practice, however, is something else entirely. The Destined Rivals drop is far from the first time there have been major issues, and despite Pokemon trying to improve the process in the past, it has only continued to get worse.
The biggest issue is how much of the stock is being bought by bots and scalpers. Destined Rivals ETBs started to appear on resale sites for inflated prices shortly after they sold out at the Pokemon Center. Unfortunately, simply printing more stock isn’t going to solve that issue – scalpers will just buy that too. The promise that more stock is coming won’t prevent some collectors from resorting to scalpers either, whether that be because they can’t wait, or through fear that stock will disappear before they have the chance to buy any.
