Nintendo Announces Helpful New Smartphone App

Shigeru Miyamoto surprised viewers at the end of the March 27 Nintendo Direct broadcast by revealing Nintendo Today, a free smartphone app that will deliver news directly to users. The Nintendo Today app will be the go-to way for Nintendo fans to get news about the upcoming Switch 2 console after the April 2 Nintendo Direct, and it is now available to download on supported devices.

The March 27 Nintendo Direct focused on games that will launch on the original Switch system throughout 2025. Several games were shown off during the show, including the return of the Patapon and the Rhythm Heaven series. Midway through the episode, fans were treated to new gameplay footage from Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, which showed off Samus Aran’s new psychic powers that can be used to solve puzzles and fend off dangerous foes. At the time of writing, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond does not have a concrete release date but is expected to launch later in 2025.

The Nintendo Today app requires a free Nintendo Account to use, along with 200MB of storage space.

After signing in, users can customize the app with various themes based on Nintendo franchises, including Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, and Splatoon. The app also features video content based on titles like Pikmin 4. The app also supports widgets, including a thematic calendar that can be added to the user’s home screen on Android and iOS devices.

Users can also filter their news feeds to notify them about specific Switch games and activities, including the Tyranitar Tera Raid battles coming to Pokemon Scarlet and Violet in late March. According to Miyamoto, Nintendo Today will be used for keeping up with daily news about the upcoming Switch 2 console, which will be shown off during the April 2 Nintendo Direct episode. However, further details about the system remain elusive.

Between the Nintendo Today app and a reported three-phase plan concerning the Switch 2’s launch cycle, anticipation surrounding Nintendo’s next console is not slowing down. Only time will tell what Nintendo’s plans are following the April 2 Direct.
