As we close out March, we look towards April – the month that traditionally follows March. Normally, this is when we’d reach a bit of a quiet period in games after every video game company has just finished jamming out their unfinished slop before the end of the quarter. Most big waves of video game releases are in one of three categories: ‘get it out before the business world knows we’re ruined’, ‘it’s summer!’, and ‘god, please let the holidays save us one last time’. The fourth, secret window of time is ‘desperately avoid the GTA 6 release date at all costs’. What’s weird is it feels like Rockstar is also following that fourth one. Not important.
But just because April can be a bit of a slow month in gaming doesn’t mean that nothing is happening. In fact, April 2025 is set to bring some massive changes to the industry that we’ll be talking about for years to come! Some of these events and releases you’re probably already aware of, but some of them might be completely new to you. But no matter what, and especially if you’re still reading this paragraph and not just skipping to the bolded parts, these will definitely be the biggest gaming stories to come out of April. No question. Absolutely.
Switch 2 Details
It feels like just yesterday the Switch 2 was officially announced after we basically told Nintendo we’d storm their headquarters if they didn’t give us a small taste. While we got a quick look at the console months back and an even quicker look at functionality, we still don’t know a lot about the console outside of leaks and rumors.
The April 2 Nintendo Direct is likely to give us everything from a launch lineup to a price to a release date to a pre-order page that will crash the moment it goes up. The teaser for the Switch 2 hinted at a Mario Kart 9 release, but it’s exciting to think about what else could be coming for the system!
Good Game, No Rematch Hits Bookstores
Of course, the more exciting event in April is the release of the book Good Game, No Rematch on April 1. It’s a series of funny essays about video games throughout the history of the art form and it’s written by an award-nominated and different-but-still-pretty-good-award-winning comedy writer!
You might be excited about the news coming out of the Nintendo Direct about the Switch 2, but you want to know some real Nintendo gossip? Something juicy? What about the time the writer got shot somewhere pretty bad during a paintball game inside Nintendo’s headquarters. That got your attention, I hope! It really hurt a lot!
Remasters And Re-Releases And Ports
Any time it’s a dry season for games, you can expect re-releases and remasters and ports. But this month is interesting because we’re getting two releases that not everyone expected would ever happen: Days Gone Remastered and Indiana Jones for the PlayStation 5. One reflects a game with a troubled release but dedicated fan base getting a second chance. The other reflects Microsoft bringing one of their best exclusives from the last few years to a rival console.
Meanwhile, we’re also getting The Last of Us 2 Remastered on PC and the Lunar Remastered collection on, well, everything. If you happened to miss these games, now’s a great chance to catch up on some big fun!
Good Game, No Rematch Entertains Audiences Everywhere
Speaking of big fun, did I mention that April marks the release of Good Game, No Rematch? It’s available in hardcover, digital, and audio, including read by the author who is – and this is not me making this up – theoretically also a stand-up comedian who’s asked for five-minute guest spots on shows all over the world. Audiences everywhere are going to go wild for a book that combines video games and comedy written in a conversational, sometimes too-familiar tone.
Dozens have already pre-ordered the book under intense social pressure from the author – don’t let yourself be the last one on your block to find out what it’s like to dress up as raccoon Mario to impress a childhood crush. Unless you already know, in which case, that story should resonate pretty, pretty well on April 1 when the book is in your hands.
The London Games Festival
Even before the end of E3, other festivals and events were beginning to take up the torch of big gaming news and reveals. The London Games Festival has been steadily growing over the years, and 2025’s event is sure to be massive with long-awaited announcements and, hopefully, a few delightful surprises. Plus, the London Games Festival opens the same day as the Switch 2 Nintendo Direct, so there’s going to be a lot to talk about.
And, even more important, it starts just one day after Good Game, No Rematch hits stores. You’ll have a full day to read the book that Publisher’s Weekly called “a hilarious treat”! They probably only left off a star because they forgot or were so impressed that a star didn’t seem sufficient to portray the brilliance.
Good Game, No Rematch Becomes The Perfect Gift For The Holidays
What’s more fun than playing video games? Owning a book about them! Please. You gotta help me out. I owe some bad people a lot of money.
