Given his position and importance to the story, many players likely wouldn’t suspect that Nagi would even be playable. But with his unique take on the Duelist class, this former captain of the White Whale is one of the strongest characters in the game. This guide will detail how to unlock Secretary Nagi for yourself, as well as obtaining his two signature arts.

First Affinity Mission – Nagi’s Time

The affinity mission to recruit Secretary Nagi might just be the easiest affinity quest in the entire game. There are only two requirements to begin the quest:

  • You must have completed Chapter 8 of the main story, titled The Gathering Storm.
  • You must be at least level 32.

Once you have attained those two prerequisites, head to the front of B.L.A.D.E. tower and speak to Commander Vandham to start the quest.

He will tell you that they’ve managed to find a piece of the Lifehold in Primordia, and that upon hearing this, Nagi wanted to go out himself to see it. After receiving a distress call from Nagi’s escort team, you are tasked with finding Nagi and bringing him home safe.

Your first waypoint will be at the Northpointe Beach area in Primordia, where you’ll discover that most of Nagi’s escort team has been killed. During the cutscene you’ll see a nearby fight going on, marking your next waypoint for this quest.

Despite arriving to the sound of gunfire, the fighting is already over, as Nagi took out the entire Ganglion squadron on his own, even without a Skell. Nagi will express grief over the loss of his escort team, blaming himself for their deaths.

Once Nagi personally buries the dead, you’ll have completed the quest and unlocked Nagi as a playable party member. You’ll also unlock the first of his two signature longsword arts: True Stream Edge, one of the most powerful TP building attacks in the game.

Second Affinity Mission – Reporting For Duty

To unlock Nagi’s second signature longsword art, Blossom Dance, you’ll need to complete Nagi’s second affinity mission, titled Reporting for Duty. To accept this affinity quest, there are only three requirements:

  • You must have completed the previous affinity mission, Nagi’s Time.
  • You must have completed Chapter 10 of the main story, titled The Zu Pharg Menace.
  • You must have obtained at least three hearts of affinity with Nagi.

Once you’ve fulfilled those three criteria, head to the area just south of B.L.A.D.E. tower to accept the affinity mission.

For this affinity mission, Commander Vandham tells you and your team that a B.L.A.D.E. team lead by a man named Orton was captured while on the way back from escorting some Mediators through the field. Upon hearing this, Nagi insists that he join you to help rescue these soldiers under his command.

You are first directed to search Hilal Stronghold in Sylvalum for any sign of the captured B.L.A.D.E.’s. After a short cutscene showing dialogue between Elma and Nagi, head inside the marked Ganglion building to find one of the captives, an Interceptor named Marla. Unfortunately, your team arrived too late to save her, though Orton is still alive at a different location.

Orton is being held in Badr Stronghold in northern Sylvalum. Once there, head inside the marked building to find Orton surrounded by several Marnuck soldiers. During a cutscene, Nagi will easily and stylishly dispatch the entire squadron, telling Orton that everything is going to be okay.

Shortly afterward, a squadron of Marnuck reinforcements come through the door. You are required to fight this squad, which includes one Marnuck Commander and two Marnuck Soldiers.

These guys can be a bit tough if you’re not properly equipped, so be sure to have your best gear. Being familiar with how to use Overdrive will also help tremendously.

Once you and Nagi have disposed of the Marnuck reinforcements, Lin tells the party that Orton is alive but needs immediate medical attention.

From here, fast travel back to New Los Angeles and head to the Mimeosome Maintenence Center. Once you arrive, Nagi will visit Orton to tell him how Elma’s team saved him, conveniently leaving out his involvement.

After that cutscene ends, you will have completed Nagi’s second affinity mission, and earned his second signature longsword art Blossom Dance as your reward. This attack is one of the strongest attacks in the game that uses TP, which means it scales off of the potential stat.
