Summary

  • Giancarlo Esposito aims to join the DCU as Doctor Freeze.
  • Fans see Esposito as a fitting choice for the role given his past villainous roles.
  • Esposito’s Freeze wouuld be very different from Schwarzenegger’s pun-focused version.

Giancarlo Esposito’s life changed when he was cast as Gustavo Fring in Breaking Bad all those years ago. His excellent turn propelled his career into a new stratosphere as a household name, but it also led to him getting far more roles playing cold-hearted villains, something he has done in Star Wars as Moff Gideon and for Marvel in the recent Captain America: Brave New World as Sidewinder. Now, it seems Esposito is keen to continue this run for DC.

Giancarlo Esposito kept this trend up in video games, starring as the antagonist of Far Cry 6.

Speaking at FanExpo Cleveland to IGN, Espositio said he’d be interested in joining the new DCU James Gunn is forming as the coldest of cold characters – Doctor Freeze. The last time Freeze appeared in a live-action film was 1997’s Batman & Robin, where he was played by Arnold Schwarzenegger. Back then, the character was constantly spouting lousy puns, so if Esposito does ever get his wish, we’ll likely see a different interpretation of Freeze this time around.

The Batman Has An Excellent Array Of Villains To Choose From

We know that there’s a new Batman heading our way in 2027, a direct sequel to the Robert Pattinson led The Batman from 2022, with Matt Reeves also returning as director. With CinemaCon just a few days away, we may just get a reveal of something then. It’s unlikely this will feature Esposito, given he was speaking speculatively and plans and casting for the film wil be in place.

Regardless, fans will likely see Esposito as a good fit given his villainous past. We’re also long overdue another live-action movie with Mr Freeze in it. Schwarzenegger’s role didn’t dig into the character’s tragedy as much as a Reeves-directed tale would, and after his prescient interpretation of Riddler as an always-online weirdo, whichever villain Batman faces next will be very interesting. Of course, it still needs to resolve Joker too.
