Summary
- Final Fantasy 14 fans are starting to lose their patience with second dye channels, and how some of them barely change anything.
- Patch 7.2 brought the topic up, thanks to a weird second dye channel for the Gryphonskin Breastguard that only changes the microscopic metal detailing rather than the actual gear.
- It’s caused many players to vent their frustrations with the system, as some asking why Square Enix “even bothers”.
Final Fantasy 14 has undergone some pretty big changes recently, not all of them particularly welcome. One of the more well-received changes going into Dawntrail was the introduction of second dye channels, allowing players to dye two different parts of the same gear in different colors, which was a big change for the game’s glam community.
Square Enix has been going back and adding second dye channels to older gear ever since, but it’s become increasingly clear over the months that the effort put into this endeavor has been very up and down. Occasionally, some gear will have a second dye channel so bizarre that it makes you question what went through the mind of the persona who came up with it.
Final Fantasy 14’s Weird Dye Channels Are Starting To Upset Fans
A very good example of this is the Gryphonskin Breastguard, which had a second dye channel added to it in Patch 7.2. This particular piece of gear has caused a stir, specifically due to how bizarre the second dye channel is. Instead of letting you die the gear’s leather and fabric separately – which would have been the sensible thing to do – the second dye channel instead lets you dye to microscopic metal clasps and detailing.
It’s essentially a second dye channel that deserves no purpose, and a lot of people – including Twitter user SmuggestSage and Reddit user Iiiiiiiiiiip – are both extremely confused and upset with it. One Reddit user called PinkBunnies66 wonders “why even bother” if second dye channels are going to be this bad, and it’s a sentiment that you’ll see quite a bit while looking through similar posts.
If I wanted to play devil’s advocate, it’s likely that these weird dye channels are a result of Square Enix working around outdated code or being worried about breaking existing glams, but fans are also right to be perplexed that they’d even bother trying if this is all they can do. It’s clear that Final Fantasy 14’s glamour system needs a big rework, but it unfortunately doesn’t appear to be high on Square Enix’s list of priorities.
