Now, it appears that the Switch 2 might do more than just play your existing cartridges. Rather, the upcoming console might also see enhanced versions of previously released titles.
Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Games Could Be On The Way
As first spotted by Wario64 on social media, the Virtual Game Cards page that Nintendo has set up following Thursday’s Nintendo Direct has some rather interesting fine print.
Tucked all the way to the bottom is the mention of both “Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive games and Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games” that can only be loaded and made playable on a Switch 2 console.
It was almost a no-brainer that the Switch 2-exclusive titles would be a thing at some point. However, what wasn’t known was whether the existing backwards-compatible games would get some kind of performance boost on the new hardware, much like how games on the PlayStation 5 Pro and Xbox Series X are often enhanced over their weaker counterparts.
The only question that remains is whether these games will be free or paid upgrades, or entirely new releases altogether. For instance, Sony has historically charged $10 to upgrade its games, such as the upcoming Days Gone remaster.
A new release isn’t out of the equation either, especially considering how Nintendo has charged full-price for ports of previously released games, much to the dismay of fans. Ultimately, only time will tell what route is taken, but given that Nintendo has another Direct scheduled imminently, it shouldn’t be too long.
