Marvel Studios Might Be About To Repeat A Previous Robert Downey Jr Mistake
One of the biggest mistakes that Marvel Studios ever made was in Iron Man 3 with the Mandarin. The entire first half of the movie had built him up as the villain of the film, and Marvel was doing a terrific job in creating an eerie character who tapped into the world of terrorism to provide fear to others. It was something that could have created an epic movie if Marvel had seen the entire story through in the manner that audiences thought would happen. However, they ended up pulling the rug from underneath the fans as Ben Kingsley’s character was actually Trevor Slattery, a paid actor pretending to play the role within the film.
It was an interesting idea and one that some MCU fans enjoyed mainly because of how entertaining Kinglsey was in the role once his real personality was revealed. However, to most people, it felt like a significant mistake, as the Mandarin could have been a legitimate villain who created a real threat to Iron Man. Unfortunately, Marvel’s decision to change matters wasn’t the right one in this instance, and it hurt the quality of Iron Man 3, but they could now be set to do something similar.
Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man Past Will Be Tapped Into In Avengers: Doomsday
The Russo Brothers recently confirmed that Downey Jr’s role as Iron Man is something that will play a part in the storyline for Avengers: Doomsday. This revelation has led to fans speculating that this version of Doctor Doom could actually be a variant of Tony Stark. Obviously, this would be a more evil version, someone who is willing to use his intelligence for evil rather than for good, as he did as Iron Man. If that’s the case, then some of Doctor Doom’s scenes within Avengers: Doomsday could see him confronted with the fact that deep down, he’s genuinely a good person, which would be a tough situation for the character to consider.
However, if Doctor Doom is approached with enough examples or if he has any memory of what happened during the battle against Thanos, there is a chance that Marvel could once again pull off an almighty swerve. It would be extremely risky, considering the amount of eyeballs that will be on Avengers: Doomsday expecting an iconic villain, but it’s something that could happen.
Marvel Might Turn Doctor Doom Into A Hero
Considering the fact that Marvel Studios is tapping into Iron Man and the sacrifice he made in Avengers: Endgame, there is a concern that Doctor Doom will ultimately become a hero. Whether that takes place in this movie or is just slowly teased before unveiling an even bigger villain for Avengers: Secret Wars, it is something that might happen. Downey Jr is certainly charismatic enough to make Doctor Doom likable if he’s put in the right situation, and this could be another example of Marvel Studios trying to switch things up mid-movie to surprise fans. However, Avengers: Doomsday has far more pressure on it than Iron Man 3 ever did, and deciding to go down that path would be a potentially catastrophic error. Considering that the MCU is generally not at the peak of its powers right now, this might be a big swing they should avoid.
After all, Marvel has a history of turning some of the biggest villains into heroes. Loki is the biggest example of that, as Tom Hiddleston’s character has ended up becoming one of the most popular characters within the MCU. Doing the same thing with Doctor Doom could be Marvel’s way of keeping Downey Jr around in the franchise moving forward for the foreseeable future, which is an obvious pull for fans. However, the idea of turning Doctor Doom into a hero or giving any glimpse of him as a good guy would be a mistake. The stakes are too high for this movie due to how many characters are involved and the potential of wasting a villain the size of Doctor Doom makes this a mistake that Marvel can ill-afford to make in Avengers: Doomsday.
