Best Shelling Gunlance Build in Monster Hunter Wilds

Best Shelling Gunlance Build in Monster Hunter Wilds

The Gunlance is essentially a handheld cannon with a bayonet. Apart from poking things with the pointy end of a sharp, metal rod, it’s also capable of unleashing devastating blasts of Wyvernfire that blow through any target in Monster Hunter Wilds.

The following is an endgame build that takes aims to make the most of the Gunlance’s Shelling and Wyvern’s Fire attacks. It’s a little different from what other weapons like the Switch Axe are used to, so take a while to learn what sets the Gunlance apart from other melee weapons.

Best High Rank Gunlance Build in Monster Hunter Wilds

MH Wilds Gunlance Shelling Build

Unlike other melee weapons, the Gunlance doesn’t rely on critical hits, and while Affinity isn’t exactly a wasted stat on it, playerse will want to get their damage from other sources. The Gunlance’s Shelling attacks cannot critically strike, and since that’s where most of the weapon’s damage comes from, we’ll be focusing on building our Attack stat instead.

  • Recovery Up 3
  • Evade Extender 3
  • Agitator 2
  • Divine Blessing 2
  • Partbreaker 2
  • Earplugs 1

When playing multiplayer, swap a Medicine 1 for Shockproof 1 to get the Shock Absorber skill, which will prevent your Shelling attacks and Wide Sweeps from staggering nearby teammates.

The Burst skill in MH Wilds is a great source of raw damage. All players need to do is hit enemies in order to activate it. While most other builds use only one point of Burst, we’ll be going with Burst 5 here together with the four-piece Guardian Ebony Odogaron set bonus to squeeze every bit of Attack we can from this skill.

Burst 5 provides +18 Attack when active, and thanks to the G Ebony set bonus, we gain an additional 10 Attack when Burst is active. Since the Odogaron bonus also extends Burst’s duration, we’ll have more leeway to get a Wyvern’s Fire blast in before the effect expires.

Evade Extender greatly increases the distance covered by the little hops players can do after attacking with their Gunlance. This skill is excellent for improving mobility, but for those who would rather have more damage, then Resentment and Counterstrike are decent options.

Weapon Choice

As with all weapons, an R8 Artian Gunlance with perfect enhancement bonuses will outperform the Smithy’s crafted weapons most of the time. However, if you don’t have the materials to create a perfect Artian weapon (or if you just don’t like how they look), then consider using the following weapons:

Ideally, you’ll want to use a Gunlance with the Slightly Strong Shelling Power, and among them, the Wide Shelling Type is the best for doing big damage as quickly as possible.

As for decorations, use the following whenever possible (in order of prioritity):

  • Artillery 3
  • Load Shells 2
  • Attack Boost 3
  • Offensive Guard 3
