Sony Releases New PS4 Console Update for March 2025

Summary

  • A new PS4 and PS4 Pro patch improves the messages and usability on certain screens.
  • Sony continues to support its last generation of consoles, though recent patches have been small.
  • Rumors suggest a new handheld PlayStation console is in development.

A new update for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro consoles has been implemented by Sony. Although the company shifted its focus to the PlayStation 5 upon its release in 2020, many are pleased to see Sony continuing to support the PlayStation 4 and its upgraded version into 2025 and likely well beyond.

The PlayStation 4 remains one of the best-selling gaming consoles of all time, shipping over 117 million units as of September 2020 and reportedly outselling the Xbox One by two-to-one. It remains the second-best-selling PlayStation system behind the PlayStation 2, and even following the release of the PlayStation 5 in 2020, the PS4 has continued to be the console of choice for many gamers. Sony has continued to support its previous consoles with the occasional update over the past few years, and players were surprised to find that the company recently released its first new update in months for both the PS4 and PS4 Pro.

A recently discovered Sony patent suggests the company could be experimenting with a unique new feature for a PlayStation controller.

Sony has revealed the official patch notes for its recent PS4 and PS4 Pro updates, and unsurprisingly, they are quite short. Version 12.50 only improves the messages and usability on certain screens, with no other changes being made to either of Sony’s devices. Curiously, Sony released a similar PS4 patch in 2025, which also included some software performance and stability improvements. This is the second PS4 update that has been released this year, with a January 2025 patch making small security fixes. It’s unlikely that players on these systems can expect any major patches going forward, though any helpful tweaks are always welcomed by users.

Earlier this month, it was reported that the pace of PS5 sales had surpassed that of the PS4 by seven percent, with the Xbox Series X/S trailing behind the Xbox One by a whopping 19 percent. During the 2024 holiday season, the PlayStation 5 sold 9.5 million units, a year-on-year increase of 1.3 million. As of February 2025, PS5 sales topped 75 million, with the release of the PlayStation 5 Pro providing another boost to sales despite its high price point.

Recent rumors indicate that Sony is developing a new handheld PlayStation console, though this mysterious piece of hardware is reportedly years away from appearing on store shelves. According to reports, the device will potentially support PlayStation 5 titles and will help take a portion of Nintendo’s share of the portable gaming market. Xbox is also working on a handheld device, with the news confirmed by Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer in November 2024.
