Protocol Documents Chest Key Location

Hidden in the back of the Village Hall, Captain Sims keeps a special Protocol Documents Chest under lock and key. This chest contains some useful items, but to get the Protocol Documents Chest Key, Atomfall players must either take Protocol on directly, or play “silly buggers” and sneak their way to its location.

The Protocol Documents Chest key is located within the idyllic, but dangerous, Wyndham Village, just down the road from the Village Hall (where the Protocol Documents Chest itself is located). But it’s not easy to get the Protocol Documents Chest Key, no matter which of the two methods you choose to follow.

How To Get The Protocol Documents Chest Key

So Close, And Yet, So Far

The Protocol Documents Chest Key location in Atomfall is atop the eastern watchtower in the middle of the village, heavily guarded by armored Protocol soldiers and fully visible to all surrounding soldiers in the area.

Head toward the watchtower in the northeast side of Wyndham Village, just northeast of the Grendel’s Head pub and just west of the eastern river – but don’t go beyond the heavily guarded fences or you will almost immediately become hostile with the nearby troops. Instead, loop around to the north side of this building to find a shed with a spot you can climb through to avoid being seen.

Enter the shed, then make a save. You will need to quicksave or reload a previous save if you mess up and get killed, and this saves a lot of time. Look under the door of the shed, and you will likely see a group of Protocol soldiers patrolling the area. You have two options here:

• Wait until the coast is clear, then sneak out and head toward the ladder that leads to the rooftop.
• Make a distraction, like throwing a Molotov Cocktail to the north side of the building before you enter the shed. If you don’t hit anyone, soldiers will be drawn to the location and away from the ladder.

Either way, you have to be fast to avoid attracting attention. Climb up the ladder to the rooftop of this Protocol compound, and you will see a lone watchtower soldier. Either kill or run past this soldier to find a chest at the very top of the rooftop. The Protocol Document Chest key is located on top of the compound within this crate.

Once you acquire the key, don’t take the ladder down. Instead, slide down the roof heading east to quickly get out of the zone and spend as little time trespassing as possible. You will take a little bit of damage upon landing, but if you sprint toward the river, you shouldn’t become hostile to any patrolling soldiers (unless you killed the guard up top).

Captain Sims’ Chest Contains Protocol Secrets

In Atomfall, the Protocol Documents Chest can be found in the very back of the Village Hall, behind the main stage where Captain Sims typically stands. Open the chest to find a handful of interesting notes and useful items, including an upgraded gun and useful melee combat crafting recipe:

• “One Spike In The Concrete” note, which explains what happened when Protocol tried to climb the wall surrounding the Quarantine Zone. Watch out – you might become sympathetic to Sims’ cause.
• Sims’ Personal Diary, which at least partially explains why the Protocol unit stationed within the Quarantine Zone is keeping up appearances, as it were.
• 1x Grenade
• 1x Combat Stim Recipe
• 15x SMG Ammo
• Peerless SMG (Stock Rarity)
