Summary

  • Invincible fans are discovering there was an attempt to adapt the comic book for TV in 2008.
  • Despite at least 19 episodes being made, there is now no trace of the show online.
  • It is currently considered lost media as nothing outside of a trailer for the show has been found.

Invincible might be the most famous superhero in the world today who isn’t owned by Marvel or DC. However, even though the Invincible comic books have existed for decades, the blue and yellow-clad hero didn’t shoot to his current level of fame until the comic was adapted by Amazon. That’s despite MTV having a crack at making an Invincible TV show almost 20 years ago.

Long before Invincible debuted on Amazon Prime, an adaptation of the comic book series was created and aired on MTV (thanks, Dexerto). If this is the first you’re hearing of this, that’s because the show has effectively been scrubbed from the face of the Earth. There’s nowhere to watch it online, nor does anyone seem to have downloaded it when it aired.

It’s already the best thing involving Invincible Kirkman has ever seen, and it’s not even finished.

When I say there’s nowhere you can watch it, I don’t just mean there isn’t a platform that carries it, as was the case for 28 Days Later up until recently. I mean it doesn’t exist. Even if Amazon wanted to put it on Prime to give Invincible fans something to watch while they wait for season four, that isn’t an option. The footage doesn’t seem to exist anywhere, and it’s not through want of trying.

According to the show’s iMDb page, there were 19 episodes of the original Invincible show and it debuted in 2008. The show aired on MTV until 2009, and despite the best efforts of people on the r/lostmedia subreddit, no one has been able to find copies of it anywhere.

Rather than a fully animated show like the one currently streaming on Prime, the first go-around at an Invincible TV show was a motion comic. Although it has mostly vanished without a trace, you can get a feel for what it was like via a preview article for the series that is still up at the New York Times. The article includes a trailer for the show which, as it stands, is the only footage from the show that still exists.

Just because the show can’t be found right now doesn’t mean it never will be. Despite airing 17 years ago, some, including myself, are only just discovering that this show even existed. That might mean the search for it becomes more widespread, and much like a Family Guy pilot from the late ’90s that was discovered this month, maybe MTV’s Invincible show is out there somewhere, waiting to be discovered.
