Since it was first announced as a possibility, Invincible fans have been dreaming about a live-action version of the hero eventually coming to the big screen. The creator of the comics that spawned the Amazon Video series has fueled excitement over the years by offering updates here and there that have made it seem as though some version of the live-action plans are moving forward. However, his latest update might be a bit frustrating for dedicated Invincible fans of the book and the show.
Invincible, the hot superhero deconstruction comic from Robert Kirkman, became a hit animated series on Amazon Prime Video. It tells the story of Mark Grayson as he struggles to deal with being the son of an alien superhero, Omni-Man, who was sent to infiltrate earth and did so by posing as an all-powerful superbeing. Omni-Man eventually shows that he’s not the hero he was made out to be and Mark has to fight him off, eventually chasing him from the planet. While the show has similarities to other comic book shows, it’s far more explicit. That’s one of the reasons fans are hoping to see the Invincible action in live-action.

Kirkman recently sat down for an interview with ComicBook and while he is still optimistic that a live-action Invincible will eventually be made. On the other hand, he still doesn’t have any idea on when it might come. And while he’s trying to put a positive spin on the idea that there will still eventually be a movie, he doesn’t have an update on when.
“Unfortunately, there’s not much I can say. I will say that the television show makes it vastly easier and vastly more difficult in various different aspects of the development of the movie. That’s kind of where I have to leave it, unfortunately. It’s still early going.”
Kirkman did add that he would be “shocked” if the live-action Invincible doesn’t eventually happen. He simply does not know when it will be. For fans of the comic and the show, claiming that it’s still “early days” has to be a bit frustrating. The idea of something beyond an animated version was raised four years ago now. They’ve also gotten several updates that were very similar to this one, which expressed optimism. This might be the first time that Kirkman has really lifted the veil and made it clear that while he’d like to do it but doesn’t have a roadmap as to when he can.
For now, that means that fans are going to have to settle seeing Mark Grayson, Atom Eve and the rest in animated form. That the voice acting cast of the Amazon series is quite talented and star-studded makes it easier to stomach. Still, it’s always the goal to see these kinds of heroes doing battle in “real life.” It’s starting to feel like they may have to wait until the series has run its course. And considering it’s already renewed for Season 4, that might be a while.
The first three seasons of Invincible are streaming on Amazon Prime Video now.
