Both weapons receiving improvements were introduced in Chapter 2 of Fortnite and are based on the Venom symbiote from the Marvel universe, with one resembling a pickaxe and the other a scythe.
The latest installment of the smash-hit title, Fortnite Chapter 6 Season 2: Lawless, launched on February 21, introducing a heist theme to the game. Along with the new theme, Fortnite also added a variety of pickaxes, including Sub Zero’s icy Battle Axes and the rare chemical-themed Titrationator. These, along with several other new items, offer players more options for close combat action. While the two upgraded melee weapons aren’t new, the changes are set to enhance gameplay for those who enjoy symbiote-inspired attacks.

Previously, these melee weapons were exclusive to the Venom and Eddie Brock, his alias, outfits. The post highlights that these are the only two pickaxes to receive the update, which allows them to be used universally, while all other locked pickaxes remain useable only with their specific skins.
Symbiote Scythe and Symbiote Slasher Unlocked for Any Skin in Fortnite
Fortnite has offered players several Venom skins, including the classic Venom outfit, the Agony Symbiote skin, and the option to play as Venom’s host, Eddie Brock. Before the changes, the Symbiote Scythe and Symbiote Slasher were locked to these skins, meaning players who enjoyed the high damage and unique abilities of the symbiote weapons could only use them if they had the right skin. However, with the recent updates, these weapons are now available for all players, allowing anyone to unleash deadly symbiote attacks, regardless of the skin they choose.
Venom was introduced to Fortnite in Chapter 2 Season 4 as part of a massive Marvel collaboration that brought many of the franchise’s heroes and villains into the game. During this season, the Symbiote Slasher weapon was also introduced, allowing players to use it with the Venom skins. Additionally, other Marvel characters, like Wolverine and Doctor Doom, came with locked melee weapons, including Wolverine’s Claws and Doctor Doom’s Mystical Bomb.
The Symbiote Scythe was introduced later in Chapter 2 Season 8, which went live in September 2021. This Fortnite season also brought Carnage, a more violent and unpredictable symbiote from the Venom universe. In the game, Carnage came with unique abilities like Symbiote Slam and Health Leeching. With the latest updates, all Fortnite skins can now wield these two powerful symbiote weapons.
