David Tennant Unlikely To Return To Max’s Harry Potter Series

Harry Potter will soon return in the form of a TV series. One of the actors who appeared in the movies was asked about the possibility of joining the TV show, but their response wasn’t promising.

The Harry Potter movie series is a live-action adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s seven-book series of the same name. It follows Harry Potter, a young wizard, as he battles the Dark Lord Voldemort. The franchise released eight movies because the last tome—Deathly Hallows—was divided into two parts. All the movies were well-received, and due to their success, the franchise has gained millions of fans worldwide and a subsequent reboot show. The upcoming TV series, which is rumored to be a more faithful adaptation of the books, is already well into pre-production. An actor who appeared in one Harry Potter movie was asked about the possibility of joining the TV series, but they weren’t enthusiastic due to their falling out with the author.

Jason Isaacs wants a female actress to play his Harry Potter role in the upcoming TV series.

David Tennant, who played Barty Crouch Jr. in the 2005 Harry Potter and the Goblet Of Fire, attended a Q&A at Planet ComicCon. At the event, he was asked if he was interested in joining the Harry Potter reboot. “I mean, they’re great stories,” he replied, per The Independent. However, he felt he had already done his part for the franchise, noting that his “contribution has probably been made.” The Doctor Who star also alluded to his public dispute with Rowling over their opposing opinions about transgender issues. Tennant said:

The Harry Potter author has been accused of being transphobic due to her views on gender identity. Rowling made headlines in 2020 after she retweeted an op-ed about “people who menstruate” without using the word “women.” She also wrote a lengthy op-ed explaining why she didn’t want transwomen to share restrooms with women. According to her, she wants “trans women to be safe,” but “I do not want to make natal girls and women less safe.” Her statement raised eyebrows, with several Harry Potter stars, including Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliffe, disagreeing by airing their support for the trans community. Tennant did the same by telling transgender people that they were free to be true to themselves and should not let others diminish or discourage them. He added, “It’s a tiny bunch of little whinging f****** [that] are on the wrong side of history, and they’ll all go away soon.” Rowling responded by sharing Tennant’s statement on X, formerly Twitter, while criticizing the actor.

Rowling is the creative mind behind the hit Harry Potter franchise. She also serves as an executive producer for the upcoming Harry Potter TV series. Although she will not be writing scripts or involved in day-to-day production, she will remain influential in the show’s creative direction and probably have a say in the casting process. Given her public feud with Tennant, it’s probably best to recast the latter’s role in the series. Recasting also makes sense because the series will introduce younger actors. Although Tennant’s appearance was brief, he became a fan favorite. However, he is now too old for his character. Tennant could still join the show and portray another character appropriate to his age. That being said, considering his sour relationship with Rowling, he is unlikely to be interested in working for the franchise again.

The Harry Potter TV series is expected to premiere in 2027.
