Pedro Pascal opens up about how he found it difficult to separate himself from Joel in The Last of Us Season 2.

Since The Last of Us season 2 was announced in January 2023, fans have wondered if the second season could live up to the storytelling power of the first. Ramsey shares most of her scenes with Pedro Pascal, who plays Joel, a man with a sad past who bonds with Ellie and tries to take care of her in the wake of people being infected by the Cordyceps fungus. Fans who have played the game and know the story well are also confused about the second season’s time jump since The Last of Us season 2 will begin five years after the season 1 finale. According to Entertainment Weekly, in 2023, showrunners Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazan explained that although some viewers said a new actress should play Ellie in season 2, they weren’t going to replace Ramsey. Mazin added that season 2 would “be different” and “It won’t be exactly like the game.”

Ramsey has starred in several TV shows and movies, including playing Lady Lyanna Mormont in Game of Thrones season 6. Playing Ellie on The Last of Us put her in the spotlight as it’s her most high-profile part to date. Ramsey also talked about Joel and Ellie not getting along like they did in The Last of Us season 1, and she mentioned that their relationship has changed in some ways because she is a young adult now. She said:

“Ellie was 14 and now is 19, and … that’s the formative years. So that … definitely informed it. But there’s obviously deeper reasons for that, for their little rift.”

The new season is likely going to be as moving, sad, and action-packed as the first. Several new actors were added to the cast recently, including Ben Ahlers, Noah Lamanna, Robert John Burke, Hettienne Park, Alanna Ubach, and Joe Pantoliano. Although some have been critical of Kaitlyn Dever being cast as Abby, the high viewership for The Last of Us season 2 trailer proves that many are looking forward to the new season. It’s also interesting to note that, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Dever was being considered for the role of Ellie when a movie adaptation of the videogame was being talked about. Since that project didn’t happen, it’s exciting to see Dever back in The Last of Us universe.

The Last of Us season 2 will arrive on HBO and Max on April 13th, 2025.
