A New Rival is an Affinity Mission in Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition that will eventually unlock a new recruit for you to befriend and use in battle. Since this is quite a time-consuming quest (depending on your circumstances and current level) with multiple steps and objectives, this guide will show you how to complete it.

Starting ‘A New Rival’ Quest in Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition
Unlocking HB
You can find the Affinity Mission icon for the ‘A New Rival’ quest next to Mission Control at the BLADE Concourse.
- Recommended Level is 15
- Primary Destination: Noctilum
After speaking with H.B., you’ll be given three separate missions. H.B. wants you to race him to see who can finish the tasks first. There’s not actually a time limit for this, but you cannot take on new story quests while this Affinity mission is ongoing.

For the Installation mission, you’ll need to install a data probe on the plains northeast of Primordia’s Sayram Lake. This mission was automatically completed for me since I already found the FN Site before taking on the quest.

How to Complete Research Mission
Open the menu with the pause button, tab over to the FrontierNav section. Here, you’ll see all the Probes and FN Sites you’ve unlocked so far.
If you click on one of your spots and then press A, you should swap the current Probe with a Research Probe.
You should see the total revenue increase on the bottom right of the screen. Keep changing the probes on the FN Sites with your Research Probes until the revenue is high enough. After that, simply wait a little bit, and the credits will be earned, completing the quest automatically.

To find Tauler, just head a little bit north from the quest start location and look in front of the ARMS MANUFACTURERS building. After handing the currency over, head back to H.B. to continue the rest of the questline. He’ll join your party before you set off on the next mission.

Head to Noctilum’s Rust Lake
Now, your next objective will take you far out northwest to Noctilum, specifically Rust Lake. You can open your map and set a marker or use the follow ball to track the mission objective, but if you don’t want to travel entirely on foot, fast travel to the nearest FN Site.
Once you reach the destination, you’ll find an injured BLADE. However, there’s a scientist up ahead who needs to be rescued. Following the path will lead you to a level 15 target monster called Thieving Dilus.
I was level 13, and my other team members were Doug, Elma, and H.B. This battle shouldn’t be too difficult, but what might make it annoying is the fact that some monsters might pop out nearby to fight you too.
To make it a little easier, we ran straight to the boss monster without drawing the attention of other monsters. If the monsters still start to join the battle, just focus on the Dilus. If it dies, the other monsters will stop attacking you. Another way to manage the chaos is to try to defeat the nearby wild monsters before fighting the Dilus.
Talk to Solan after the beast is dead. After a short scene, the Affinity Mission will be completed. You’ll be rewarded with 160 XP and 9000 money. You will also be able to use H.B. as a party member whenever you want.
