Kibutsuji Muzan is the Demon King, the progenitor of all demons in Demon Slayer. But where did he come from, and how did he become a demon himself?
Which Breathing Style Is Muzan the Weakest To?
Muzan is no simple demon; he has managed to live for over a thousand years. For those thousand years, he lived around humans and must have overcome most of his weaknesses. He has incredible abilities like Night-Absolute Regeneration, which allows him to regenerate his lost body parts in an instant. This ability was seen in use during Season 4, Episode 8, when he instantly regenerated his smashed head. But despite his abilities, he is not invincible. In fact, he was once almost defeated by Yoriichi Tsugikuni, who used Sun Breathing.
To date, Muzan is struck with fear by the memories of Yoriichi. This suggests that Muzan is still quite vulnerable to Sun Breathing.
I’ve heard these words before.
Who is that? I don’t know.
This isn’t me. These aren’t my memories.
It’s the cells! Master Muzan’s!
The memories of the cells…
– Daki, Season 2, Episode 13
Why Does Sun Breathing Work on Muzan?
Sun Breathing was the first Breathing Style. The fundamental Breathing Styles were all inspired and alternative versions of Sun Breathing, suggesting that it is the strongest Breathing Style. To fight Muzan, Yoriichi created the Thirteenth Form of Sun Breathing, which was an accumulation of the previous Twelve Forms. The Form gains accuracy and speed with the reputation of the Twelve Forms, which makes it ideal for fighting Muzan.
Muzan’s anatomy is unique; he has 7 hearts and 5 brains that move freely inside his body, which makes it impossible to finish him off. Sun Breathing’s unmatched speed and accuracy make it possible to hit the moving organs inside Muzan. It is also important to note that Sun Breathing’s existence was forgotten for centuries. This made it impossible for Muzan to adapt to it, hence making him still weak to it.
Can Other Breathing Styles Work on Muzan?
When used by powerful swordsmen like the Hashira, even other Breathing Styles are bound to do some damage to Muzan. While he is very resilient and adaptable, he is not immune to other Breathing Styles. Some Breathing Styles that might be effective against Muzan include:
- Insect Breathing: The creation of Shinobu Kocho might do some serious damage to Muzan. It is the most unique Breathing Style as it does not rely on beheading and slicing but instead stabbing and piercing. Shinobu’s technique aims at poisoning its target, which critically hits the demon’s inner organs and makes them unable to function normally. With the use of a strong enough poison, Insect Breathing can significantly weaken Muzan.
- Stone Breathing: Stone Breathing stands out as it does not use Nichirin swords. Instead, it relies on the usage of a flail and ax. The Breathing Style was proven to be effective on Muzan when Gyomei managed to block Muzan’s attack and also smash his head.
