The Best Characters In A Certain Magical Index

A Certain Magical Index is the first anime series in a series of Toaru stories. This includes A Certain Scientific Railgun and A Certain Scientific Accelerator. These shows combine to form one larger narrative but focus mostly on giving certain characters the center stage.

With A Certain Magical Index being the main series, there are plenty of characters that have unique backstories as well as progression that you won’t see in the other shows. So, which characters are the best in the mainline series? While some may have fantastic moments in their own spinoffs, there are some that do it better this time around.

Index Librorum Prohibitorum

A Mind Full Of Magical Texts

Also known as Index, Index Librorum Prohibitorum is one of the main reasons the world of science and magic start to collide. While she plays a very minor role in the spinoffs, Index fuels the plot for A Certain Magical Index.

Her brain is loaded with an entire library’s worth of magical tomes, which unfortunately results in her memories being wiped to keep it from overloading. This turned out to be false with Index being allowed to keep them as she falls under Touma’s care. Despite sometimes feeling like a side character, she is a catalyst for many of the events that happen and acts as a knot that ties many character’s fates together.

Misaka 10032

More Than Just A Clone

Misaka 10032 is a clone first introduced in the Sisters Arc of A Certain Magical Index. Despite making an entrance as an emotionless clone of Mikoto Misaka, she slowly starts to grow into her own character. This is the beauty of Misaka 10032’s character arc as she slowly starts to see herself as something other than a clone.

She is attacked by Accelerator during his rampage against the various Misaka clones early in the story. After being saved by Touma and seeing her life being treated with value, she too begins to have appreciation for being alive. She is a character that continuously shows up while showing progress with her development little by little.

Hamazura Shiage

An Everyman Vs The World

While Touma may be considered the show’s level zero esper, Hamazura Shaige fits the role more accurately. This is because he is truly powerless in the many chaotic situations that befall him and the rest of the cast. This also makes him compelling, since he is essentially the everyman in each conflict he participates in.

This does not mean that he has nothing to offer the team. He is strong as far as regular humans go, and he can get the one up on his villains using his sharp mind. He is a delinquent with a code of honor and willing to fight for those he cares for, even if it means going up against those far more powerful than he is.

Last Order

One Final Clone Of Misaka

Thanks to the Sisters Project, there are a bunch of Misaka clones running around Academy City. One of which is considered the final clone, Last Order, which was released after Accelerator’s defeat at the hands of Touma. Unlike the other clones, Last Order can emote, is younger, and contains the memories of every other clone that came before her. She even repeats her name twice, while every other clone repeats it only once.

She serves as a foil to Accelerator but also as a major plot point when a virus infects the Misaka clones through her connection with them. Her optimism is also contagious as she interacts with the rest of the cast.

Mikoto Misaka

One Of The Most Powerful Espers

Misaka is a level five esper who is hotheaded and can use her powers as a railgun against enemies. She is one of the more prominent side characters in A Certain Magical Index and even got her own spinoff in the form of A Certain

Her involvement with Touma eventually leads to feelings being developed, though Touma remembers none of it. Like Accelerator, she believes she is the toughest only to have the world reveal that there are other stronger entities out there. Since then, she becomes a powerful ally to Touma, lending her assistance throughout nearly every important arc in the series.

Touma Kamijou

The Power To Nullify Abilities

Touma is a great character to follow in A Certain Magical Index. His powers contrast the world around him since they shut down other abilities whenever he makes contact with them. This power is known as Imagine Breaker.

He takes care of Index but he also has his own problems as well. One of the most prominent is that, due to his encounters with Misaka and Index, a big chunk of his memories are missing. This includes the memories of his parents, which make for awkward encounters. His union with Index also causes the scientific and magical worlds to collide as he fights to protect her from those that want to use her.

Aleister Crowley

The Ultimate Antagonist

There is nothing like an antagonist that spends most of the time in the shadows. This can make them quite intriguing as they get built up as the ultimate bad. Aleister Crowley is known throughout the story as the greatest magician in history yet one of the worst as well. This is due to Crowley’s obsession with using science to overtake magic.

Aleister Crowley is always at the root of every major arc of the story. Without having to be on screen most of the time, their presence slowly builds up with each trial the heroes face off against, making him the greatest threat in the series.

Accelerator

An Anti Hero Makes A Comeback

Accelerator starts off the series as one of the biggest villains to be aware of. A level five esper, he targets Misaka clones, which angers Touma. Luckily, Touma, being a level zero esper, deduces that defeating Accelerator himself would ruin his reputation and stop any experiments he is a part of.

After his defeat, Accelerator goes through some of the most interesting changes in the series. He stops being hyper aggressive and even looks after Last Order. This shift reveals other sides to him, which eventually results in him becoming more of an anti-hero than a villain. His powers, while destructive, later prove useful in saving lives rather than taking them.
