Pokemon Champions Could Be Leaving Two Generational Gimmicks High and Dry

Pokemon has certainly done a good job of giving fans things to look forward to, given all the announcements it has made recently. The most interesting one that has caught the attention of many is the introduction of a title that makes the battling aspect accessible to everyone while also innovating on the formula many are used to from one of the biggest franchises of Nintendo. Dubbed Pokemon Champions, it is designed to be playable on mobile devices and select consoles, mixing gimmicks from previous generations that allow for more diverse combat experiences. As interesting and exciting as its concept sounds, many questions still surround it. A big one, in particular, revolves around the absence of two popular mechanics one would have expected to be in such a game.

On February 27, 2025, the Pokemon Presents event released a trailer for the upcoming Pokemon Champions game. While the video showed that the game has a lot of promise, especially with battles having more than one generational gimmick, people could not help but notice that it lacked two mechanics: Dynamaxing and Z-Moves. Not seeing the two in the trailer has raised some eyebrows, given how well-received they were and how they could enhance combat with the variety of ways they can be used. Although they might be present upon the game’s release, their current absence still raises some concern, especially for those who wish to see how they fare against other generational gimmicks that are set to be present in Pokemon Champions.

Pokemon Champions Could Finally Be an Official Version of One of the Best Fan Projects

Pokemon Champions was first revealed during Pokemon Day 2025, and if the announcement trailer is to be believed, it may resemble a major fan project.

Why Pokemon Champions Shouldn’t Forego Dynamaxing and Z-Moves

If not seeing both mechanics during Pokemon Champion‘s announcement trailer means they won’t be included, then the game would likely be much worse off because of the decision. Dynamax and Z-Moves feel like essential inclusions in a game whose whole concept focuses on battles, as the two bring a few things that fans would likely be satisfied with:

  • They add more depth to how players form teams and strategies, ensuring that there is a lot of diversity when it comes to engaging in fights with different people.
  • It allows for more visually appealing battles, ensuring that there is always something exciting to look at.
  • Their addition can make even the most seemingly simple fights unpredictable, helping ensure that every experience is different from the last.

The lack of both mechanics can be seen as a major elephant in the room that Pokemon Champions will need to address eventually, but there’s no telling if it ever will. Considering there are fans who wonder about their absence, providing them with updates sooner rather than later would be in the game’s best interest.

How Having Dynamax and Z-Moves Could Help Pokemon Champions in One Aspect

A big catch of Pokemon Champions is that it will be limited in the number of Pokemon it will have at launch. As a game that wants to make the franchise more accessible and give it a worldwide audience, a lack of monsters would surely be detrimental. However, implementing the Dynamax and Z-Moves mechanics could be the push needed for the team behind the title’s development to add as much as possible. The two enhanced the quality of the games they were in, and certain Pokemon became more well-known because of how visually striking they were when they used these gimmicks in battle. Adding them along with the mechanics should be a move that’s strongly considered, as it would help increase Pokemon Champions roster, aesthetic appeal, and the game’s chances of success.

Many details regarding Pokemon Champions remain unclear, and there will be eventual announcements regarding them in the future. Hopefully, that involves the fate of Dynamax and Z-Moves being added, as fans would certainly want to know if such popular mechanics make a return, thus improving the game, or if they will be absent, which can be seen as a missed opportunity.
