A Solid Selection
The highlight of the Master Collection Volume 1 is the Metal Gear Solid trio of titles. First released in 1998 for the original PlayStation, Hideo Kojima’s Metal Gear Solid was considered revolutionary upon its release. Players had never experienced a video game that was so cinematic. The characters, the codec calls, the cutscenes, it all felt so revolutionary at the time. Truthfully, it all still holds up quite well to this day.
Three years later, up against insane expectations, Kojima and Konami dropped Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty for the PlayStation 2. Somehow, the project lived up to the hype. The game essentially doubled down on everything that made Metal Gear Solid so exceptional. The story had plenty of twists and turns, including a bait-and-switch of the main character that was heavily divisive when the sequel was released. Like the original, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is considered a timeless classic.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is the final modern game in the Master Collection Volume 1. The game is a prequel to Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and is recognized as the first game in the series’ timeline. Released in 2004 for the PlayStation 2, Snake Eater takes place in 1964 and features Naked Snake as the title’s protagonist. Kojima did it yet again, somehow exceeding the expectations that fans had set. Many critics at the time labeled it as the best Metal Gear Solid game yet, making it obvious why Konami decided to develop the upcoming remake.
It’s not just the trio of Solid games in the package though. Fans can get a history lesson on the series’ origins thanks to the inclusion of the MSX versions of Metal Gear (1987) and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (1990). The NES versions of Metal Gear (1987) and Snake’s Revenge (1990) are in the package too.
On top of all the games, there’s a slew of bonus content in the Master Collection Volume 1 too. The Metal Gear Solid soundtrack is playable. Screenplays and Master Books for Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater are included too.
