The LEGO franchise has consistently found new and inventive ways to delight gamers of all ages across the globe. Whether it be through TT Games’ licensed adventures or the recent original works from brand-new developers, the LEGO series has been among the peak of all-ages gaming. Just as the popular toy brand continues to thrive, so too does its presence in the video game world.
Recently, the LEGO brand also announced that a new primary developer would be working on the series, taking the reign from TT Games for the first time in well over a decade. This announcement naturally brings with it the potential for major shake-ups to the LEGO series in the future. One franchise that could absolutely benefit from a LEGO crossover would be Kingdom Hearts, which could take on a unique new path for the series.

A LEGO/Kingdom Hearts Crossover May Be A Fun Offshoot
Disney And LEGO Already Have A Great Relationship
Already, Kingdom Hearts has a unique concept as a game that lends itself well to the oddball charm of the LEGO series. As soon as the original game was announced, it attracted intrigue as a crossover between the Final Fantasy games and Disney films. Given the franchise’s naturally off-the-wall premise and LEGO‘s tendency for humorous takes on established IPs, a Kingdom Hearts crossover could be a great way to introduce younger players to the franchise.
After all, Disney has allowed the LEGO brand to use its franchises for several games in the past. Gamers have gotten titles like LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game and LEGO The Incredibles in the past, and even after Disney’s high-profile acquisitions of studios like Marvel and Lucasfilm, LEGO has still gone forward with new LEGO Marvel and LEGO Star Wars titles over the years. Disney has a great relationship with the LEGO brand, and a Kingdom Hearts crossover would be a great addition to their combined catalogs.
Kingdom Hearts Is Unique Enough For A LEGO Game
Even as strange of a crossover as it would be, it wouldn’t be too left-field for Kingdom Hearts, as the franchise has gotten weird with its genre-bending in the past. Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories made massive changes to the combat with a card-based system, while the franchise’s latest entry Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory was a full-blown rhythm game. Square has shown a willingness to take Kingdom Hearts in several different directions, so a LEGO game could fit the franchise perfectly.
A LEGO Kingdom Hearts game would also be a boon for the franchise, as it would allow Square Enix to implement certain Disney worlds and characters that may not be the right fit for a larger world in a mainline Kingdom Hearts game. Furthermore, with LEGO‘s tendency to include large amounts of playable characters, a LEGO game could really take advantage of Disney’s IP with its playable characters. While some may want this to wait until Kingdom Hearts 4, perhaps a LEGO Kingdom Hearts game could finally allow players to take control of Sora’s companions, Donald and Goofy.

LEGO Kingdom Hearts Could Be A Boon For Square Enix’s IPs
Beyond the Disney connection, a LEGO Kingdom Hearts title could be a blessing for the franchise’s Square Enix roots. Having a game such as this for a young audience could serve as a bit of a push for young players to easily get into the Final Fantasy series before jumping into some of the franchise’s bigger titles. Given that some Kingdom Hearts titles have also taken to representing other Square Enix franchises – notably The World Ends With You – a LEGO game could also help give some representation to other Square Enix IPs.
A LEGO crossover with the Kingdom Hearts series is certainly an unconventional idea, but the Kingdom Hearts franchise has never been afraid to go against convention. As the franchise continues to go through major twists and turns, a LEGO game would fit in perfectly and be a boon for LEGO, Square Enix, and Disney. If Kingdom Hearts 4 still has a ways to go, perhaps a LEGO spin-off could help quell some fans’ appetites before the next major title is ready to go.
